al-Tawheed in Surah al-Burooj: ibn al-Qayyim

In part of his work dedicated to discussing the oaths is the Qur’an, ibn al-Qayyim wrote the highlighted the following point in part of his treatment of surah al-Burooj:

وقد اشتملت هذه السورة على اختصارها من التوحيد

Despite its short size, this surah – surah a-Burooj (85)contains numerous proofs for al-Tawheed:

على وصفه سبحانه بالعزة المتضمنة للقدرة والقوة وعدم النظير

It characterizes Allah as Mighty, a term which encompasses complete ability, power and the absence of any peer. [see 85:8]

والحمد المتضمن لصفات الكمال والتنزيه عن أضدادها مع محبته وإلهيته

It describes Him as being Praiseworthy, which entails attributes of completion and negates any opposite deficient qualities. This also points to His qualities of love and His divine nature. [see 85:8]

وملكه السموات والأرض المتضمن لكمال غناه وسعة ملكه

It mentions His ownership of the heavens and the earth, which indicates a complete lack of need for anyone or anything else, as well as pointing to the expansiveness of His ownership. [see 85:9]

وشهادته على كل شيء المتضمن لعموم اطلاعه على ظواهر الأمور وبواطنها وإحاطة بصره بمرئياتها وسمعه بمسموعاتها وعلمه بمعلوماتها

It mentions that He is witness to all things, which entails His complete awareness and familiarity with both the outer and inner aspects of all things and His all-encompassing hearing and seeing and knowing of everything that is heard or seen or known. [see 85:9]

ووصفه بشدة البطش المتضمن لكمال القوة والعزة والقدرة

It describes Him as being severe in His vengeance, which entails complete power, might and ability. [see 85:12]

وتفرده بالإبداء والاعادة المتضمن لتوحيد ربوبيته وتصرفه في المخلوقات بالابداء والاعادة وانقيادها لقدرته فلا يستعصي عليه منها شيء

It singles Him out as being the only One with the ability to both create things a first time and to recreate them after their demise, which entails His al-Tawheed al-Ruboobiyyah, His ability to initiate and reanimate the created beings as He wills, and their submission to His power, for nothing can escape His might. [see 85:13]

ووصفه بالمغفرة المتضمن لكمال جوده وإحسانه وغناه ورحمته

It describes Him as being forgiving, which indicates the completeness of His bounty, His goodness towards His creations, His freedom of need from them, and His mercy towards them. [see 85:14]

ووصفه بالودود المتضمن لكونه حبيبا إلى عباده محبا لهم

It describes Him as being al-Wadood – Loving -, which entails that He is beloved to His slaves and loving towards them. [see 85:14]

ووصفه بأنه ذو العرش الذي لا يقدر قدره سواه وأن عرشه المختص به لا يليق بغيره أن يستوي عليه

It describes Him as being the Owner of the Throne whose greatness cannot be compared to anything else. And the Throne is His exclusively, with no one else deserving to ascend it. [see 85:15]

ووصفه بالمجد المتضمن لسعة العلم والقدرة والملك والغنى والجود والاحسان والكرم

It describes Him as being Magnificent, which entails the expansiveness of His knowledge, ability, ownership, complete independence, generosity, goodness to His creation, and beneficence. [see 85:15]

وكونه فعالا لما يريد المتضمن لحياته وعلمه وقدرته ومشيئته وحكمته وغير ذلك من أوصاف كماله . ـ

It describes Him as doing whatever He wishes, which points to His qualities of life, knowledge, ability, will, wisdom, as well as the other perfect qualities which He possesses. [see 85:16]

فهذه السورة كتاب مستقل في أصول الدين تكفي من فهمها . ـ

So this surah is a book in its own right on the fundamentals of this religion which would be sufficient for whoever has truly grasped it.
