“If you support Allah, He will support you”: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee mentions the following in his tafsir of surah Muhammad:

Allah’s statement:

O you who have believed, if you support Allah, He will support you and plant your feet firmly. [47:7]

In this noble ayah, Allah mentioned that if the believers support their Lord, then He will support them against their enemies and make their feet firm – meaning He will protect them from fleeing or defeat.

Allah has made this meaning clear and listed some of the characteristics of those to whom He has promised this support in a number of other ayaat, such as in His statement:

And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might. [22:40]

He then clarified the attributes of those whom He had promised this aid to in His very next statement: Continue reading

Applying Allah’s Guidance regarding the News of the Faasiq: Sheikh Muhammad Bazmool

In surah al-Hujuraat, Allah commands the believers by saying:

O you who believe! If a faasiq (rebellious evil person) comes to you with a news, verify it, lest you harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful of what you have done. [49:6]

alhamdulillah, we have previously translated the explanations of sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee and sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sa’di for this ayah, which we would encourage you to read if you are not already familiar with the meaning and implications of this ayah before continuing on with this article.

In what follows below, Sheikh Muhammad Bazmool provided a brief explanation demonstrating an application of this ayah. He said:

Doesn’t Allah say:

If a faasiq comes to you with a news, verify it

and in one variant reading, “authenticate it“? Is Allah rejecting the news of the faasiq in this ayah? No, He is not rejecting it. What is meant is: if the news of a faasiq comes to you, then look into the related circumstances and evidences. Then if the outside evidences indicate that his news is acceptable, accept it. But if the outside evidences indicate that his news is not acceptable, then reject it. This is in contrast to the news of an upright honest person, for the norm when it comes to an upright honest person is that his news is accepted, and this is understood from this ayah by implication.

So then, this ayah is not saying that the news of a faasiq is rejected automatically. Rather, it is saying that the news of a faasiq should be checked, meaning, the outside evidences should be investigated. Continue reading

Inauthentic Narrations regarding the Virtues of Certain Surahs: Sheikh ibn ‘Uthaymeen

The following questions were posed to Sheikh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen during the program Fataawaa Noor ‘alaa al-Darb:

Moderator: May Allah endow you with good. We have a question here from a women in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates who has sent a series of questions and signed her name as F.H.A. Dubai. She says: I want to ask about the authenticity of some ahaadeeth. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Whoever recites surah al-Dukhaan (44) during the night, he will wake up with seventy thousand angels seeking forgiveness for him.”

Sheikh: Yes, this is a weak hadeeth with no basis.

Moderator: The second hadeeth: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Whoever recites surah al-Waaqi’ah (56) every night will not be stricken with poverty.” Continue reading

“If a Faasiq comes to you with news, verify it…”: Tafsir al-Shinqitee and al-Sa’di

Allah commands the believers in surah al-Hujuraat by saying:

O you who believe! If a faasiq (rebellious evil person) comes to you with a news, verify it, lest you harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful of what you have done. [49:6]

In his book of tafsir, sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote the following regarding this ayah:

This noble ayah was revealed concerning al-Waleed ibn ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu’ayt. The Prophet (ﷺ) had sent him to the Banu al-Mustaliq tribe to collect the zakaah from them. When they heard that he was coming, they excitedly went to meet him. However he was afraid of them and thought that they wanted to kill him, so he went back to the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) and claimed that they had withheld the zakaah and had intended to kill him. Later a delegation from that tribe came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and informed him of al-Waleed’s lie, and so Allah revealed this ayah, which indicates that one should not affirm news given by a faasiq.

And elsewhere Allah has explicitly mentioned the prohibition of accepting the legal testimony of a faasiq, which was His statement:

And do not accept their testimony, ever. Those ones are the defiant sinners [24:4]

and there is no disagreement among the scholars about rejecting the legal testimony of the faasiqoon and not accepting what they say at face value. Continue reading

Turning Away from the Sources of Tafsir: Ibn Taymiyah

In the midst of a wider discussion within his book al-Eemaan, sheikh al-Islaam ibn Taymiyyah included the following valuable aside regarding some of the causes for deviating while making tafsir, centering around turning away from the sources of tafsir. For any readers who are not already familiar with the sources of tafsir, we would recommend first reading this brief article from sheik Saalih al-Fawzan on the subject before continuing:

[ ص: 119 ]  ـ

The textual sources definitively prove that whoever has a mustard seed’s weight of eemaan in his heart will eventually be taken out of the Hell-fire. However, when it comes to this fundamental principle, the Murji’ah have turned away from the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the statements of the sahabah and those who followed them in goodness and instead they relied on their own opinions and their own interpretations and their own understandings of linguistic matters. This is the way of the people of religious innovation (ahl al-bid’ah), and it was in their vein that Imam Ahmad said, “The most common areas in which people err are interpreting words outside of their predominant meanings and analogical reasoning.”

And so you find the Mu’tazilah, the Murji’ah, the Raafidah, and other groups of the ahl al-bid’ah making tafsir of the Qur’an according to their own views, reasonings, and linguistic interpretations, and you find that they do not rely on the statements of the Prophet (ﷺ) or the sahabah or the tabi’oon or the scholars. So they do not rely on the Sunnah or on the consensus of the early generations or on the statements and positions relayed from them; they only rely on intellect and linguistics. Continue reading

“O Messenger, Convey what has been Revealed to you”: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

In his tafsir of surah al-Maa’idah, sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee mentioned the following brief point:

Allah’s statement:

O Messenger, convey that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people. [5:67]

In this noble ayah Allah commanded His prophet (ﷺ) to convey what was revealed to him. And He affirmed his compliance concerning this matter in numerous ayaat, such as His statement:

This day I have perfected for you your religion [5:3]

And His statement:

Advice for Memorizing the Qur’an: Sheikh ibn ‘Uthaymeen

The following question was posed to sheikh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen during the program Fataawaa Noor ‘alaa al-Darb:

Question: May Allah bless you. This is from al-Shaadhili al-Sayyid of Egypt, from the province of Qinaa. He says, “Honorable sheikh, I want to memorize the Qur’an, however I do not know how I should memorize the Qur’an. May Allah reward you.”

Answer: The way for a person to memorize the Qur’an differs according to different people’s natures and differences in the teacher who he listens to. So there are a number of different methods.

One of them is for a person to memorize five ayaat at a time, and not to proceed forward until he has perfected these ayaat completely.

Another method is for him to memorize an entire page and then to repeat it [i.e., until he has memorized it well]. Continue reading

The Qualities of those who Hasten towards Good: Khutbah of Imam al-Sa’di

The following khutbah was published in a collection of more than 400 sermons of sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di:

Khutbah on the Qualities of those who Hasten towards Good

All praise belongs to Allah who blesses whichever of His slaves He wills by enabling them to carry out good deeds and abstain from evil acts.

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except for Allah alone, with no partners. It is He whose names and attributes are completely perfect. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger, the most noble of all created beings.

O Allah, bestow your blessings and salutations upon Muhammad, upon his family, upon his companions, and also upon those who follow them in their statements, actions and beliefs.

To proceed: O people! Exercise taqwa of Allah by believing in what He has informed you, by complying with what He has commanded you, and by avoiding what He has forbidden for you. For Allah has described the best of His created beings with these attributes. He said:

Those who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord * And who believe in the signs of their Lord * And who do not associate anything with their Lord * And who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord – * These are the ones who hasten to good deeds, and they are the forerunners to them. [23:57-61] Continue reading

The Virtue of Memorizing the Qur’an: Sheikh Muqbil

Sheikh Muqbil ibn Haadee al-Waadi’ee was asked:

Question: Is memorizing the Qur’an an obligation for the Muslim, or is contemplating it and acting in accordance with it what is obligatory?

Response: Contemplating its meanings and acting in accordance with it and its rulings is what is obligatory. As for memorization, then that is a excellent virtue.

The one who is skilled in the Qur’an will be with the noble righteous recording angels, and the one who recites while experiencing difficulty in doing so, stumbling over it, will have two rewards.

And the Prophet (ﷺ) also said:

It will be said to the one who has any of the Qur’an memorized, “Recite and ascend in rank. Recite in the same manner and speed that used to recite during the worldly life, and your rank will be at the last ayah that your recite.”

And the Prophet (ﷺ) used to encourage his companions to memorize the Qur’an and to study the Qur’an, just as he said in the hadeeth of ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Aamir recorded by Muslim: Continue reading
