Two Joys for the Fasting Person: Imam al-Sa’di

In his collection of comprehensive statements of the Prophet (ﷺ), Imam ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di brought the following hadeeth:

Hadeeth #35: There are Two Joys for the Fasting Person

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

Every deed of the son of Adam will be multiplied: a single good deed tenfold up to seven hundred times. Allah said, “Except for the fasting, for it is for Me, and I shall reward for it: he has left off his desires and his food for My Sake.” The fasting person has two occasions of joy: a joy at the time of his breaking the fast, and a joy at the time of meeting his Lord. And the smell from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of misk. And fasting is a shield. And when it is a day of fasting for one of you, then do not engage in obscene speech nor raise your voice, then if anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him he should say, “I am a fasting person.”

This is agreed upon [i.e. both al-Bukhari and Muslim recorded it].

What is more magnificent than this hadeeth! For indeed it mentions deeds generally, then fasting specifically and it makes mention of its virtues and attributes and both its immediate and delayed rewards, and (also) an explanation of the wisdom behind it and the objective of it, as well as what is appropriate regarding it of honorable etiquettes. All of these things are included in this hadeeth! Continue reading

Generosity and Studying the Qur’an during Ramadan – Ibn Hajr

In Saheeh al-Bukhari, in the Book of Wahyi (Revelation), Ibn ‘Abbaas is recorded as saying:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was the most generous of people, and he was even more generous in Ramadan when Jibreel used to meet him. Every night of Ramadan Jibreel used to come to him and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would study the Qur’an with him. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was more generous in giving good than the blowing wind.

[Saheeh al-Bukhari #6]

In part of his commentary on this hadeeth, Ibn Hajr al-‘Asqalaani wrote:

His statement, “So he would study the Qur’an with him“.

It is said that the wisdom in this is that studying the Qur’an refreshed his knowledge by increasing in a feeling of self-contentedness, and contentedness is a cause of generosity. And al-Jood (generosity) according to the religious terminology is: giving what is appropriate to whom it is appropriate, and this is more general than al-sadaqah.

And also, Ramadan is a season of goodnesses, for Allah has blessed His slaves with an increase (of good) therein compared to other times, so the Prophet (ﷺ) imitated following Allah’s sunnah with His slaves.

Khutbah on the Merits of Ramadan: Imam al-Sa’di

The following khutbah was recorded in a book containing more than 400 sermons of sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di:

A Khutbah for Ramadan and its virtues which have not previously been mentioned

All praise belongs to Allah for what He has of beautiful Names and lofty Likeness, and for what He created and ordained, both in the beginning and the end.

And I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone with no partner alongside Him, elevated above any deficiency. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His chosen messenger and revered prophet.

O Allah, bestow Your blessings and peace upon Muhammad and upon his family and his knowledgeable, honorable, noble companions.

As to what follows: O people, have taqwa of Allah as He is deserving of taqwa, and that done is by avoiding what displeases Him and by following what pleases Him, and by gratitude to Him for what He has granted of blessings. Allah has allowed you the respite to reach this honored month, and He has bestowed His all-expansive  generosity upon you therein. It was in this month that Allah sent down the Qur’an, containing guidance, goodness and clarity.

In this month there is the opening of the gates of mercy and goodness, and in it there is the closing of the gates of the Hell-fire and the repentance of the disobedient ones from sins. And a caller calls therein to goodness, “O one who excels in good, devote yourself to acts of obedience! O one who is excessive in evil, reign yourself in and repent from your acts of disobedience! And to Allah belong those emancipated from the Hell-fire.” And this occurs every night at the time of the breaking of the fast, so turn yourselves to the blessings of al-Muhsin al-Ghaffaar [the Excellent One, the Exceedingly Forgiving]. The Multiplication of Rewards during Ramadan: Ibn Rajab

In the opening of his discussion of the month of Ramadan, Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali mentioned the following points of benefit regarding the multiplication of rewards for deeds, which particular attention given to the multiplication during the month of Ramadan:

Know that the multiplication of rewards for deeds takes place due to several causes.

Among these is the distinction of the place in which that deed is performed such as the Haram. And in this vein is performing al-salaah in the two masjids of Mecca and al-Madinah, as has been confirmed in the authentic hadeeth that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “al-salaah in my masjid is better than one thousand salaat in any other masjid, except for Masjid al-Haraam“. And in another narration, “for indeed it is more meritorious”. And likewise it is narrated “that (the reward of) fasting is multiplied in the haram“, and with a weak isnaad in Sunan ibn Maajah a marfoo’ hadeeth on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbaas, “whoever reaches Ramadan in Mecca and fasts it and stands whatever is easy for him (in night prayer), Allah has written (the reward) of one hundred thousand months of Ramadan observed elsewhere,” and for that person he mentioned an abundant reward. Khutbah of Imam al-Sa’di on the eve of Ramadan

In the collection of the Friday sermons of ‘allaamah ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di, there were a number of sermons given in relation to the months and events of the Hijri calendar. What follows is one of his sermons delivered on the eve of Ramadan:

A Khutbah on receiving Ramadan during intense heat, and an explanation of the blessing of Allah upon the believers thereby

All praise is due to Allah who legislated the legal rulings as a mercy to all creation. He made them as a means leading to every goodness and as a reminder to the worshippers, and He aids the worshippers in fulfilling them by making it easy for them and offering the hope of its promise [i.e. reward], and He is the best of aids for the slave who seeks aid.

And I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone with no partners, al-Malik al-haqq al-mubeen. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His messenger who clarified the rulings of the deen, and he carried out servitude to his Lord until death came to him.

O Allah, grant your blessings upon Muhammad and upon his family and all of his companions, and upon those who follow them in goodness until the final day – and peace upon him.

As to what follows: O people, have taqwa of Allah, and know that Allah has enjoined the fasting of Ramadan upon you as a mercy and ihsaan towards you, and as a favor, kindness and blessing upon you.

By means of it your eemaan is purified, and your islaam is completed. And by it your sins are forgiven, and your misdeeds are erased. And by it the recompense and reward from your Lord is completed. And by it you are saved on the Day of Dread from a painful punishment. And by it you reach the pleasure of al-Rahman, and you earn entrance into al-Jannah through the gate of al-Rayyaan. Three reasons why it is disliked to fast one or two days before Ramadan: Ibn Rajab

As it comes in both Saheeh al-Bukhari and Saheeh Muslim, Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:

None of you should fast a day or two before the month of Ramadan unless he has the habit of (optional) fasting, then in that case he can fast that day.

[al-Bukhari #1983, Muslim #1082, Abu Dawood #2335, al-Tirmidhi #684]

In his chapter on the month of Sha’baan, Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali offers a long and beneficial discussion regarding the different rulings of fasting during the second half of this month leading up to Ramadan. After providing some of the different cases and rulings pertaining to the issue, he summarized and clarified the issue by writing:

So in sum, the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah is acted upon by many of the scholars regarding this subject, and they disliked the practice of preceding Ramadan with one or two days of voluntary fasting for those for whom [voluntary fasting] was not their regular practice and who had also not done any fasting prior to that in the month of Sha’baan by which to connect that to fasting during its last part.

And this aforementioned dislike is for three reasons: Continue reading

The Rewards of Obedience, and the Different Categories of People in Respects to that: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Allah says in surah al-Maa’idah:

And if only they upheld [the law of] the Tawrah, the Injeel, and what has been revealed to them from their Lord, they would have consumed [provision] from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them are a moderate community, but many of them – evil is that which they do. [5:66]

Commenting on this ayah in his book of tafsir, Imam Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote:

Allah’s statement:

And if only they upheld [the law of] the Tawrah, the Injeel, and what has been revealed to them from their Lord, they would have consumed [provision] from above them and from beneath their feet.

In this noble ayah He mentioned that if only the Ahl al-Kitaab were to obey Allah and uphold their scripture by following it and acting according to what is in it, then Allah would facilitate provision for them, send rain upon them, and bring forth the produce of the earth for them.

And elsewhere He clarified that that is not exclusive to them, such as His statement concerning Nooh and his people: Continue reading

Four categories of parentage and four categories of offspring: Tafsir ibn Kathir

Allah mentions in surah al-Shooraa:

To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He creates what he wills. He gives to whom He wills female [children], and He gives to whom He wills males.  Or He pairs them with males and females, and He renders whom He wills barren. Indeed, He is Knowing and Powerful.  [42:49-50]‌

Commenting on this in his book of tafsir, Imam Ismaa’eel ibn Kathir wrote the following:

Allah informs us that He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and the owner of them both, and the controller of what is in them. And He informs us that whatever He wills is, and whatever He does not will is not, and that He grants what He wills and prevents what He wills, and there is none who can prevent what He grants nor is there anyone who can grant what He prevents. And He informs us that He creates what He wills, and:

He gives to whom He wills female [children]

– meaning, He provides one with only daughters . Al-Baghawi said, “Included in this category is Loot (‘alaihi al-salaam).”

and He gives to whom He wills males

– meaning, He provides one with only sons. Al-Baghawi said, “Such as Ibrahim al-Khaleel (‘alaihi al-salaam) – no females were born to him. Continue reading

A Comprehensive Statement regarding Bid’ah: Imam al-Sa’di

In part of a collection of the fataawa of Imam ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di, he discusses the issue of al-bid’ah (innovation) as follows:

Issue number Fifteen – A Comprehensive Statement regarding Bid’ah

al-Bid’ah: it is introducing something new into the deen. For indeed the deen is that which the Prophet (ﷺ) brought in the Book and the Sunnah, and what the evidences of the Book and the Sunnah indicate. So that is from the deen, and whatever opposes that, then that is bid’ah. That is the overarching principle. And bid’ah is divided according to its condition into two categories: 1) innovations of creed, and this is (also) referred to as al-bida’ al-qawliyyah (innovations of speech), and the standard against which this is measured is his (ﷺ) statement:

“This nation will divide into seventy-three sects, all of them in the Hell-fire except one” They said, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “Those who are upon the likes of what I and my companions are on today.”

So the People of the pure Sunnah who are safe from al-bid’ah are those who cling to what the Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions were upon in regards to all the fundamental matters; the fundamentals of al-Tawheed and messengership and al-Qadr, and the issues of al-eemaan and other than that.
