A Clarification regarding the Questioning on the Day of Judgement: Imam al-Shinqitee

In his book dedicated to clarifying difficult passages of the Qur’an and removing doubts concerning them, Imam Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote the following in his section on surah al-A’araaf:

Allah said:

Then We will surely question those to whom [a message] was sent, and We will surely question the messengers. [7:6]

This noble ayah indicates that Allah will question all of mankind on Yawm al-Qiyaamah. And its parallel is Allah’s statement:

So by your Lord, We will surely question them all * About what they used to do. [15:92-93]

And His statement:

And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned. [37:24]

And His statement:

And [mention] the Day He will call them and say, “What did you answer the messengers?” [28:65]

And it has come in other ayaat that which indicates the contrary to that, such as His statement:

Then on that Day none will be asked about his sin among men or jinn. [55:39]

And such as His statement:

But the criminals, about their sins, will not be asked. [28:78]

“The Disbelievers – they are the Thaalimoon”: Tafsir al-Sa’di

Allah commands the believers in surah al-Baqarah:

O you who have believed, spend from that which We have provided for you before there comes a Day in which there is no exchange and no friendship and no intercession. And the disbelievers – they are the thaalimoon. [2:254]

Commenting on this ayah in his book of tafsir, Imam ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sa’di wrote:

And it is from the kindness of Allah to His slaves that He commanded them to send forward something of that with which Allah has provided them – out of the obligatory and recommended charity – in order that it may be stored-up, rewarded and paid back in full on the Day when the doer of deeds will be in need of (even) an atom’s worth of good deeds. The wisdom of not disclosing the date of Laylatu’l-Qadr: Imam al-Baghawi

In his tafsir of surah al-Qadr, Imam Abu Muhammad al-Baghawi mentions some of the different opinions regarding the date of Laylatu’l-Qadr and then concludes by writing:

In sum, Allah left the exact date of Laylah al-Qadr uncertain for this ummah in order that they might strive in worship during all the nights of Ramadan in hopes of attaining it. This is just as He concealed which hour of Friday is the hour in which supplications are accepted, and just as He concealed which of the five daily prayers is the middle prayer, or which of His names is the greatest. His pleasure is in acts of obedience, so let the people aspire to do them all, and His displeasure is in acts of disobedience, so let them abstain from all of them. And Allah also concealed the time of the Final Hour in order that the people would exert themselves in acts of obedience in watchfulness of its establishment.

“That is your rescue from the hell-fire”: Sharh al-Nawawi

Imam Muslim records in his Saheeh that Abu Moosaa reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said,

“On the Day of Resurrection Allah would deliver to every Muslim a Jew or a Christian and say: That is your rescue from Hell-Fire.”

[Saheeh Muslim #2767]

Imam al-Nawawi, in his explanation of Saheeh Muslim, writes the following concerning this hadeeth:

His statement (ﷺ), “On the Day of Resurrection Allah would deliver to every Muslim a Jew or a Christian and say: That is your rescue from Hell-Fire“, and in another narration, “No Muslim would die but Allah would admit in his stead a Jew or a Christian in Hell-Fire” [Muslim #2767b], and in another narration, “There would come people amongst the Muslims on the Day of Resurrection with sins the likeness of a mountain, and Allah would forgive them and He would place in their stead the Jews and the Christians” [Muslim #2767d].

Your rescue” is deliverance and ransom. And the meaning of this hadeeth is what has come in the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah “There is no one among you who does not have two abodes: An abode in Paradise and an abode in Hell” [1]. So when the believer enters al-Jannah, then the kaafir takes his place in the hell-fire, deserving it by virtue of his kufr (disbelief). Continue reading
