Qualities of the Successful Believers – Part 2/7: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Allah begins surah al-Mu’minoon with 11 ayaat describing the qualities of the successful believers and their ultimate reward. Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee broke his tafsir of these ayaat into seven sections, which we have translated and will publish as a series over the coming weeks. To read section one, click here. Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee continued his tafsir of the opening of surah al-Mumi’noon as follows:

Allah’s statement:

And those who turn away from al-Laghw [23:3]

In this noble ayah, Allah mentioned that one of the characteristics of the successful believers is turning away from al-Laghw. And the root meaning of al-Laghw is that which contains no benefit – whether it be speech or actions. So this includes idle play, distractions, and idle joking, and whatever chivalry requires one to do without.

The Fundamentals of the Prohibited Deeds – Khutbah of Imam al-Sa’di

From a collection of more than 400 sermons of Imam ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di:

Khutbah on Allah’s statement, “Say, ‘My Lord has only forbidden immoralities – what is apparent of them and what is concealed…'”

All praise belongs to Allah who commanded His slaves with everything in which there is good and rectitude for them, and prohibited them from all harms and despicable actions.

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone with no partners, the Noble, the Giver of victory.

And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger who prohibited every abhorrent thing and permitted every good and allowable thing.

O Allah! Bestow Your peace and blessings upon Muhammad and upon his family and his companions, the preeminent ones in terms of guidance, reverence of Allah and ultimate salvation.

To proceed: O Mankind! Have taqwa of Allah by abandoning what angers Him and his prohibitions, and by enacting what He has obligated and what pleases Him. And He has gathered the fundamentals of what He has made forbidden for you in a single ayah, which is His statement, Continue reading

Two Joys for the Fasting Person: Imam al-Sa’di

In his collection of comprehensive statements of the Prophet (ﷺ), Imam ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di brought the following hadeeth:

Hadeeth #35: There are Two Joys for the Fasting Person

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

Every deed of the son of Adam will be multiplied: a single good deed tenfold up to seven hundred times. Allah said, “Except for the fasting, for it is for Me, and I shall reward for it: he has left off his desires and his food for My Sake.” The fasting person has two occasions of joy: a joy at the time of his breaking the fast, and a joy at the time of meeting his Lord. And the smell from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of misk. And fasting is a shield. And when it is a day of fasting for one of you, then do not engage in obscene speech nor raise your voice, then if anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him he should say, “I am a fasting person.”

This is agreed upon [i.e. both al-Bukhari and Muslim recorded it].

What is more magnificent than this hadeeth! For indeed it mentions deeds generally, then fasting specifically and it makes mention of its virtues and attributes and both its immediate and delayed rewards, and (also) an explanation of the wisdom behind it and the objective of it, as well as what is appropriate regarding it of honorable etiquettes. All of these things are included in this hadeeth! Continue reading

Generosity and Studying the Qur’an during Ramadan – Ibn Hajr

In Saheeh al-Bukhari, in the Book of Wahyi (Revelation), Ibn ‘Abbaas is recorded as saying:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was the most generous of people, and he was even more generous in Ramadan when Jibreel used to meet him. Every night of Ramadan Jibreel used to come to him and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would study the Qur’an with him. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was more generous in giving good than the blowing wind.

[Saheeh al-Bukhari #6]

In part of his commentary on this hadeeth, Ibn Hajr al-‘Asqalaani wrote:

His statement, “So he would study the Qur’an with him“.

It is said that the wisdom in this is that studying the Qur’an refreshed his knowledge by increasing in a feeling of self-contentedness, and contentedness is a cause of generosity. And al-Jood (generosity) according to the religious terminology is: giving what is appropriate to whom it is appropriate, and this is more general than al-sadaqah.

And also, Ramadan is a season of goodnesses, for Allah has blessed His slaves with an increase (of good) therein compared to other times, so the Prophet (ﷺ) imitated following Allah’s sunnah with His slaves.

And ibn Hajr also wrote: Continue reading
