The Sahabah and Tabi’oon known for their Tafsir: al-Suyooti

In his famous work detailing the sciences of the Qur’an, sheikh Jalaal al-Deen al-Suyooti included a section on the different generations of mufassiroon (Qur’anic exegetes). What follows is a condensed and streamlined presentation of the first part of this chapter, as prepared by sheikh Muhammad ibn ‘Umar Bazmool:

The Level of the Sahabah

Those who are well known among the sahabah for tafsir are ten: the four Khulafaa’ [Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan, and ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib], ibn Mas’ood, ibn ‘Abbas, Ubay ibn Ka’b, Zayd ibn Thaabit, Abu Moosaa al-Ash’ari, and ‘Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr.

As for the Khulafaa’, then the one from whom the most is transmitted is ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib, while what is transmitted from the other three is very little. The reason for that is because those three died earlier, just as that is the reason why there is little in the way of hadeeth narrated from Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), nor was much preserved from Abu Bakr in the way tafsir except for a very few statements which hardly even amount to ten in total. But as for ‘Ali, then a great deal was transmitted from him. Continue reading

Does the term “al-Mushrikoon” include the Ahl al-Kitaab? – Imam al-Shinqitee

During a lesson that sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee once gave in Jordan, he was asked a series of three questions from one of the students of knowledge present. The second of these questions was:

Does the term “al-Mushrikoon” include the Ahl al-Kitaab?

In response to this question, the sheikh answered:

As for the answer to the second question, then it is regarding what some have mentioned that the Qur’an makes a distinction between the Mushrikoon and the Ahl al-Kitaab, and as evidence they cite the ayah of surah al-Maa’idah:

You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allah; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, “We are Christians.” [5:82]

And it is as they say, because mentioning two items of the same part-of-speech category together [i.e. “the Jews” and “those who associate others with Allah”] entails that there is some distinction between the two when taken at its apparent linguistic meaning. Continue reading

Tafsir of Surah al-Fatihah: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote the following explanation in his book of tafsir, Adhwaa’ al-Bayaan, regarding surah al-Fatihah. The entire theme of al-Shinqitee’s tafsir was to specifically focus on explaining the Qur’an by means of the Qur’an, and his explanation of surah al-Fatihah here is no different. Due to this focused approach, this explanation contains some benefits not frequently emphasized in other works of tafsir, and acts as a valuable addition and complement to the broader tafsir literature.

In the name of Allah, al-Rahman al-Raheem

Surah al-Fatihah

○ Allah’s statement:

[All] praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds [1:1]

Here there are no mention of accompanying circumstances of place or time to go with His praise, but in surah al-Room He mentioned that the heavens and the earth are among the accompanying circumstances of place for it. This was in His statement:

And to Him is the praise in the heavens and the earth [30:18]

And in surah al-Qasas He mentioned that this worldly life and the hereafter are among the accompanying circumstances of time for it. This was in His statement:

And He is Allah – there is no deity worthy of worship except Him. To Him is the praise in the first and the last [28:70]

And in the beginning of surah Saba’ He said:

To Him is the praise in the Hereafter, and He is the Most Wise, the Intimately Acquainted [34:1]

And the definite article of alif and lam in al-Hamd [the praise] causes it to encompass all praises, and that is commendation which He has lauded upon Himself, and this entails Him commanding His slaves to laud Him with with that phrase as well.

The Story of Qarun: Tafsir al-Sa’di

In his tafsir of surah al-Qasas, sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di wrote the following explanation regarding the story of Qarun (28:76-82):

Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them… (28:76)

until the end of the story [28:82]. Allah informs us of the condition of Qarun, what he did, what was done to him, and what he was advised and admonished with. So He said:

Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses (28:76)

– meaning: from Banu Israa’eel, those who had been favored over all creation, and they surpassed others in their time, and Allah blessed with what He blessed them with. So it was befitting that their condition would be uprightness, however this Qarun tyrannized his people and wronged them with what he had been given of great tyrannical wealth.

And We gave him of treasures… (28:76)

– i.e.: treasures meaning a great amount of wealth

…whose keys would burden a band of strong men (28:76)

and al-‘usbah (a band) is anywhere from ten to nine to seven [of something in number], or the likes of that. Meaning: It was to the extent that the keys to the treasures to the wealth weighed heavily on the group of strong men carrying them. These were (only) the keys, so then what do you think about the treasures?!

thereupon his people said to him… (28:76)

offering him sincere advice and warning him of this transgression

…”Do not exult. Indeed, Allah does not like the exultant.” (28:76)

– meaning: do not revel in this magnificent worldly life or boast over it or let it distract you from the hereafter, for indeed Allah does not love those who exult in it nor those who are devoted to its love. Continue reading

“Do you argue with us about Allah while He is our Lord and your Lord?”: Tafsir al-Sa’di

Allah says at the end of the first juz’ in surah al-Baqarah:

Say, [O Muhammad], “Do you argue with us about Allah while He is our Lord and your Lord? For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. And we are sincere to Him.” [2:139]

Commenting on this is his famous book of tafsir, sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di wrote:

“Arguing” is a dispute between two or more people related to issues of differing where each of the two disputants desires the victory of his position and the invalidation of his opponent’s position. So both of them strives to establish the proofs for that. And what is sought is for this to be done by that which is better, by the nearest path which subjugates the falsehood to the truth and establishes a proof against the stubborn ones, and makes the truth manifest and clarifies the falsehood. So if it goes beyond these affairs, then it merely quarreling and antagonism in which there is no good, and it produces whatever evil it produces. So the Ahl al-Kitaab would assert that they are the awliyaa’ (close ones) of Allah rather than the Muslims, and this is simply a claim which is devoid of any proof or evidence. Continue reading

Khutbah regarding ‘Aashooraa’: Imam al-Sa’di

In a collection of more than 400 sermons of sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di, the following khutbah was one of several related to the month of Muharram:

The second Khutbah regarding the month of Allah, al-Muharram

All praise belongs to Allah, the One who is irresistibly powerful over His slaves with might and authority; the One who is fully capable of enacting His will for He did not take any assistance in the creation of the heavens and the earth; the One who aids those who aid His deen so He saves these ones from being overcome by failure. How magnificent is His greatness, not to mention the greatness of His Lordship! The necks of the tyrants humble themselves to His might in submissiveness, and the testimony of witnessed examples proves His right to be singled out. He divided the creation as He willed into those of the right and those of the left; some of them ascribed to eemaan and some ascribed to disbelief. This division was ordained and then concealed except for the fact that ultimate happiness and sorrow have signs and indications, so glad tidings to those who:

when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith [8:2]

and ill tidings for those who, when the ayaat of their Lord are mentioned to them, they suddenly become deaf and blind.

I praise Him – exalted is He – privately and openly. And I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship in truth except Allah alone with no partners – a testimony through which I hope for safety on the Day of Judgement. And I testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger – the most complete of the creation in terms of intellect and the most just in judgement.

O Allah, bestow peace and blessings upon Your slave and Messenger Muhammad and upon his family and his companions – those through whom Allah aided His religion and as such they were helpers and aids.

To proceed: O People! Exercise taqwa of Allah – the taqwa of one who fears Him, keeps his guard up and is upright -, and adhere to what is obligatory upon you of the duties of al-eemaan and al-islaam, and love Him due to that with which He has nurtured you of abundant favors and blessings.

And know – may Allah have mercy on you all – that you are facing a new year and an emphasized sacred month – especially its tenth day – of abundant and plentiful rewards.

A Principle to Dispel Specious Arguments and Doubts: Imam al-Sa’di

In surah Aali ‘Imran, Allah devotes some eighty-odd ayaat to addressing the Christians, disproving their ways, and calling them to the truth. In part of this section He says:

Indeed, the example of  ‘Eesaa (Jesus) to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, “Be,” and he was. * The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters. [3:59-60]

Commenting on this in his famous book tafsir, Imam ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di wrote:

Allah informs us by way of objecting to the Christians who make claims – with neither conclusive proofs nor (even) substantial doubts – about ‘Eesaa (‘alaihi al-salaam) which contain no truth. Rather, according to their assertion, because of the fact that he does not have a father, then this requires that he is the son of Allah or a partner with Allah in terms of lordship. But this is not a substantial doubt – much less a conclusive proof – because his being created in that way is one of the demonstrative signs of Allah’s exclusive role in creation and administration and that all of the causative factors are subject to His will and submissive to His wishes. So this is fully exposing the deficiency of their claim and proving that no one is deserving of partnership with Allah in any way at all. Continue reading

Banu Israa’eel’s abuse of Moosaa: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Imam Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote the following in his tafsir of surah al-Saff:

Allah’s statement [in surah al-Saff]:

And (remember) when Moosaa said to his people, “O my people, why do you abuse me while you certainly know that I am the messenger of Allah to you?” And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people. [61:5]

Regarding the statement of Moosaa (‘alaihi al-salaam), “why do you abuse me?” Allah does not explain what type of harm this is, and the likes of this general language have also come in His statement [in surah al-Ahzaab]:

O you who have believed, do not be like those who abused Moosaa; then Allah cleared him of what they said [33:69]

And regarding this, Ibn Kathir presented the following in his tafsir, transmitting the hadeeth of al-Bukhari that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: Continue reading

Studying the Qur’an and the Softening of Hearts: ibn Kathir

In the introduction to his celebrated book of tafsir, Imam Abu’l-Fidaa’ Ismaa’eel ibn Kathir mentioned the following point of benefit:

Allah said:

Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’an? If it had been from other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction. [4:82]

And He said:

[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded. [38:29]

And He said: Continue reading

The Rewards of Obedience, and the Different Categories of People in Respects to that: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Allah says in surah al-Maa’idah:

And if only they upheld [the law of] the Tawrah, the Injeel, and what has been revealed to them from their Lord, they would have consumed [provision] from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them are a moderate community, but many of them – evil is that which they do. [5:66]

Commenting on this ayah in his book of tafsir, Imam Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote:

Allah’s statement:

And if only they upheld [the law of] the Tawrah, the Injeel, and what has been revealed to them from their Lord, they would have consumed [provision] from above them and from beneath their feet.

In this noble ayah He mentioned that if only the Ahl al-Kitaab were to obey Allah and uphold their scripture by following it and acting according to what is in it, then Allah would facilitate provision for them, send rain upon them, and bring forth the produce of the earth for them.

And elsewhere He clarified that that is not exclusive to them, such as His statement concerning Nooh and his people: Continue reading
