Tafsir of Ayah al-Kursi Guide

بسم الله ، والحمد لله ، والصلاة والسلام على المصطفى

Due to the significance and importance of Ayah al-Kursi [surah al-Baqarah 2:255], we set out to translate three explanations of this ayah from reliable books of tafsir which could collectively serve as a brief program of study in the English language. Each of the following explanations comes from books of tafsir written and recommended by salafi scholars, and each was written with the non-expert reader in mind.

We advise that these explanations be read in a sequence moving from least detailed to most detailed, starting with al-Taysir al-Muyassar. This will help the reader to review and strengthen his or her comprehension of the ayah’s contents and increase his or her understanding in stages. These works also offer an opportunity to compare the methods and styles of different mufassiroon. Below we have provided some information about each one these explanations to help guide the reader:

○ Tafsir of Ayah al-Kursi: al-Tafsir al-Muyassar

This work will help the reader gain a basic and uncomplicated understanding of the meanings of this ayah.

The book Al-Tafsir al-Muyassar was written by a group of scholars under the direction of sheikh Saalih Aal al-Sheikh, Minister of Islamic Affairs for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This explanation was written using clear and direct language, focused on conveying the primary meanings of the ayaat in accordance with the understanding of the salaf, as well as mentioning some important points of benefit. It essentially serves as a gloss of the ayah, or a translation supplemented with further details, benefits or notes of clarification

○ Explanation of Ayah al-Kursi: Sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sa’di

This work will help the reader deepen his knowledge of the ayah and understand how its meanings can be applied in his own life.

This explanation comes from the first section of al-Sa’di’s book of thematic tafsir, Taysir al-Lateef al-Mannaan. It is a brief but highly beneficial explanation of the ayah, which is slightly longer and more detailed than the explanation in his better known complete book of tafsir, Tafsir al-Kareem al-Rahman. al-Sa’di goes through each part of the ayah, explaining its vocabulary, its meanings and mentioning points of benefit. In particular, this explanation contains a focus on personal development and implementation of what the ayah entails.

○ Tafsir of Ayah al-Kursi: Sheikh Faisal Aal Mubarak

Beginning Student of Knowledge — [click here to read] – Forthcoming November 14th, inshaAllaah

This work will further reinforce and deepen the reader’s understanding of this ayah by connecting him directly to explanations of the salaf and great scholars of the past while also introducing him to some more advanced concepts in the field of the Qur’anic sciences.

Sheikh Faisal Aal Mubarak set out to pen an accessible work of tafsir pulling primarily from the three most reliable books of tafsir – ibn Jarir al-Tabari, ibn Kathir and al-Baghawi – as well as other great scholars of the past. His book condenses these great works and selects choice quotes from them to easily clarify the meanings while also occasionally highlighting points of difference or certain relevant topics in the Qur’anic sciences. This work can help the reader catch a glimpse of the more detailed books of tafsir and introduce, further reinforce and develop his understanding of this important ayah.

May Allah make these translations a source of benefit for the reader, the translator and the original authors. BaarakAllaahu feekum.
