Tafsir of Surah al-Baqarah 204-214: al-Tafsir al-Muyassar

This is the twenty-first installment of our translation of al-Tafsir al-Muyassar‘s explanation of surah al-Baqarah, covering ayaat 204-214. This passage calls the believers to completely embrace Islam and contrasts their situation with the people who did not completely embrace Islam. See the series guide here for more information about this series and other installments.

And there are some people whose speech amazes you in this worldly life and he calls Allah as a witness to what is in his heart, yet he is the most quarrelsome of opponents [2:204]

204. Some of the munafiqoon may amaze you – O Messenger – with the eloquent speech that they use to gain some share of this worldly life, but not for the hereafter. And they will swear, calling Allah as a witness to the love of Islam that is in their hearts. But this is extreme boldness towards Allah, as this person is extreme in their opposition and challenge against Islam and the Muslims.

And when he turns away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption in it and to destroy the crops and animals. And Allah does not love corruption. [2:205]

205. And when he departs from your presence – O Messenger -, he works and strives throughout the land to cause corruption in it, destroy the people’s crops, and kill their animals. And Allah does not love corruption.

And when he is told, “Have taqwa of Allah”, pride in sin takes hold of him. Hell is sufficient for him, and what a horrible end that is. [2:206]

206. And when this destructive munafiq is advised by being told, “Have taqwa of Allah, beware of His punishment, and stop causing corruption in the land,” he does not accept the advice. Instead pride and pre-Islamic habits cause him to increase in sin. So the hellfire is a sufficient punishment for him, and what a terrible place to lay that is.

And there are some people who sell themselves seeking Allah’s pleasure. And Allah is kind to the slaves. [2:207]

207. And some people sell themselves, seeking for Allah to be pleased with them. They do this through jihad in the path of Allah and being faithfully obedient to Him. And Allah is kind to the slaves, showing an expansive mercy to His believing servants both in the short-term and the long-term, for He will reward them with the best of rewards.

O you who believe, enter into submission completely, and do not follow the footsteps of the shaytaan. He is certainly a clear enemy to you. [2:208]

208. O you who have believed in Allah as your Lord, Muhammad as your Messenger, and Islam as your religion, enter into the entire legislated system of Islam, practicing all of its rulings without leaving off anything. And do not follow the pathway of the shaytaan from which he calls you to sin. He is certainly a enemy to you, and his enmity is clear to see, so beware of him.

For if you slide back after the clear guidance has come to you, then know that Allah is Almighty, Wise. [2:209]

209. For if you deviate from the path of truth after the clear proofs of the Qur’an and Sunnah have come to you, then know that Allah is Almighty over His dominion and nothing can escape Him, and that He is Wise in His commands and prohibitions, placing everything in its proper place.

Are they waiting for anything other than for Allah to come to them in the shadows of the cloud, as well as the angels, and for the matter to be decided? And all matters will be returned to Allah. [2:210]

210. The only thing that these stubborn disbelievers are waiting for after the clear proofs have been provided is for Allah the Mighty and Majestic to come to them in a manner that befits His exalted state in the shadows of the clouds on the Day of Resurrection to judge between them with justice. And they wait for the angels as well. When that occurs, Allah will judge between them. And all of the affairs of the created beings will be referred back to Allah alone.

Ask the Children of Israa’eel how many clear signs have We given them. And whoever trades the blessing of Allah after it has come to him, then Allah is certainly severe in punishment. [2:211]

211. O Messenger, ask the Children of Israa’eel who stubbornly oppose you: How many clear signs have We given you in your scriptures to guide you to the truth? But you disbelieved in all of them, rejected them, and changed them from their proper places. And whoever trades the blessing of Allah – which is His religion – and disbelieves in it after knowing it and after the proof is made against him, then Allah will certainly be severe in punishment towards him.

The life of this world has been made beautiful for those who disbelieve, and they ridicule those who believe. But those who have taqwa will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. And Allah will provide for whomever He wishes without measure. [2:212]

212. The life of this world and the desires and enjoyments that it contains have been made beautiful for those who reject Allah’s sole right to worship, and they mock the believers. But those who fear their Lord will be above all of the disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection when Allah will admit them to the highest levels of Jannah and send the disbelievers down to the lowest levels of the Fire. And Allah will provide for whomever of His creation He wills without limit.

Mankind was one nation. Then Allah sent the Prophets as bringers of good news and warners, and He sent down scripture with them in truth to judge between the people regarding what they differed over. And none differed about it except those whom had been given it, after the clear proofs had come to them, out of enmity between them. So Allah guided those who believed to the truth regarding what they different over, by His permission. And Allah guides whom He wills to the straight path.[2:213]

213. Mankind was one body united in belief in Allah. Then they differed regarding their religious beliefs, so Allah sent Prophets calling them to Allah’s religion, bringing good news of Jannah for those who obeyed Allah and warning those who disbelieved in Him and disobeyed Him of the Hellfire. And He sent heavenly scriptures along with them, containing truth within them, so that they could use them to judge those matters in which people differed. And none differed over the matter of Muhammad and his scripture out of wrongdoing and jealousy except those to whom Allah had given the Tawrah and who knew the proofs and rulings that it contained. Then Allah, out of His grace, guided the believers to be able to distinguish truth from falsehood and to correct knowledge of the things which they differed over. And Allah guides whichever slaves of His He wishes to the straight path.

Or did you think that you would enter Jannah without the likes of what came to those who passed away before you coming to you? They were struck by poverty and hardship and were shaken until the messenger and those who believed along with him said, “When will Allah’s aid be?” Certainly, Allah’s aid is near. [2:214]

214. But did you – O believers – think that you would enter Jannah without being struck by trials like those that struck the believers who passed away before you, such as poverty, sickness, fear, terror, and being shaken by all kinds of worries, until their messenger and the believers with him said – seeking to hasten the aid from Allah – , “When will Allah’s aid be?” Certainly, Allah’s aid is near to the believers.
