Tafsir of Surah al-Baqarah 30-39: al-Tafsir al-Muyassar

This is the third installment of our translation of al-Tafsir al-Muyassar‘s explanation of surah al-Baqarah, covering ayaat 30-39, which focuses on the story of Adam. See the series guide here for more information.

And when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to make an authority on the earth.” They said, “Will you place someone who corrupts it and spills blood in it while we exalt Your praises and sanctify You?” He said, “I certainly know what you do not know.” [2:30]

30. And mention to the people, O Messenger, when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to place a people on the earth who will follow one after the other in maintaining it.” They said, “O our Lord! Teach and guide us to the wisdom behind creating these people when part of their lot is to corrupt the earth and shed blood out of oppression and enmity. Meanwhile we obey Your command and exalt You above having any shortcomings, as fits with Your praiseworthiness and majesty. And we praise You for every perfect and majestic attribute of Yours. Allah said to them, “I certainly know a profound wisdom for creating them that you do not know.”

And He taught Adam the names, all of them. Then He presented them to the angels and said, “Tell me the names of these things if you are truthful.” [2:31]

31. In order to illustrate Adam’s great merit, Allah taught him the names of every thing. Then He presented these named things to the angels while saying to them, “Tell me the names of these things present in front of you if you sincerely believe that you are more deserving of being put in authority over the earth than them.”

They said, “Exalted are You! We have no knowledge with us except for what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, All-Wise.” [2:32]

32. The angels said, “We exalt You above any shortcomings, our Lord! We have no knowledge with us except for what You have taught us. Indeed, You alone are the All-Knowing of the matters of Your creation, All-Wise in how You manage them.”

He said, “Adam, inform them of their names.” After he informed them of their names, He said, “Didn’t I tell you that I know the secrets of the heavens and the earth. And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed.” [2:33]

33. Allah said, “Adam, tell them the names of these things which they were not able to recognize.” After Adam informed them of this, Allah then said to the angels, “I certainly told you that I know what is concealed from you in the heavens and the earth, and that I know what you openly do and what you conceal.”

And when We told the angels, “Prostrate to Adam.” So they prostrated, except for Iblis. He refused and was arrogant, and he was one of the disbelievers. [2:34]

34. And mention to the people, O Messenger, how Allah honored Adam when he told the angels, “Prostrate to Adam out of respect to him and to demonstrate his virtue.” So they all obeyed Him, except for Iblis. He refrained from prostrating out of arrogance and jealousy, thus becoming one of those who disbelieves in Allah and disobeys His commands.

And We said, “Adam, you and your wife dwell in Paradise and eat from it in abundance from wherever you please. But do not approach this tree, for then you would be among the wrongdoers.” [2:35]

35. Allah said, “Adam, you and your wife Hawa’ dwell in Paradise and enjoy its fruits with pleasure, ease and in abundance in any place the two of you like. But do not approach this tree, so that you do not fall into disobedience and become one of those who contravene Allah’s commands.”

But the Shaytaan caused them to slip out of it and removed them from where they had been. And We said, “Go down, as enemies to one another. There is dwelling for you in the earth and enjoyment for a time.” [2:36]

36. But the Shaytaan caused them to err by whispering to them until they both ate from the tree. So he was the cause for theem being expelled from Paradise and its pleasures. Allah said to them, “Go down to the earth, being enemies to one another,” i.e. Adam and Hawa’ and the Shaytaan, “There is dwelling and residence for you in the earth. And benefit yourselves with what it contains until your allotted times come to an end.”

Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful. [2:37]

37. Then Adam received some words with acceptance. Allah inspired him to repent and seek forgiveness, and these words were:

Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, then we will be among the losers. [7:23]

So Allah accepted his repentance and forgive him of his sins. Allah is certainly the Oft-Forgiving and Most-Merciful towards His servants who repent.

We said, “Get down from it, all of you. Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance, then there will be no fear for him nor will he grieve.” [2:38]

38. Allah told them, “Get down from Paradise all together. You and your successive offspring will be sent something holding your guidance to the truth. So whoever acts according to it, then there will be no fear for them regarding the matters of the hereafter which lie ahead of them, nor will they grieve over the matters of this world which have already passed.

And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs – they are the inhabitants of the Fire. They will be in it eternally. [2:39]

39. Those who disbelieve and deny Our ayaat which are recited and the proofs for Our sole right to be worshiped – they are those who will be stuck in the Hellfire, dwelling it in eternally and never leaving.
