There has Certainly Been an Excellent Example for You in Ibrahim

One of the valuable books of Badr al-Deen ibn Jamaa’ah (d. 733AH) was Kashf al-Ma’aani fee al-Mutashaabih min al-Mathaani, which focused on providing explanations for the slight differences in otherwise similar ayaat. What follows are his notes related to surah al-Mumtahinah [60]:

Question: Allah says

There has certainly been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim and those with him … [60:4]

and then He says:

There has certainly been an excellent excellent for you in them … [60:6]

This has been repeated twice, so what is the benefit of it being repeated?

Response: What is meant in the first instance is to follow their lead in disassociating oneself from the disbelievers and whatever they worship besides Allah, while what is meant in the second instance is to follow their lead in terms of good deeds and avoiding sins. That is clear from the statement that immediately follows the second instance:

There has certainly been an excellent excellent for you in them for whoever has hope for Allah and the Last Day [60:6]

i.e. its rewards and punishment.
