Paying Attention to Who the Qur’an is Addressing: Sheikh Muhammad Bazmool

Sheikh Muhammad Bazmool, a professor at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca, wrote:

Consider the phrase, “Follow the Speech of Allah, for the Speech of Allah comes first!” or the phrase, “Give me a hadith that the Prophet did that or said that!” Both of these phrases run counter to the sharee’ah that Allah legislated and go against His religion! It would be accurate to say that both of these phrases are true statements which are used to support falsehood.

Let me explain:

There is no disagreement that the very foundation of the religion is following Allah’s Speech. That is not just something good; it is something binding on every Muslim. However, the place for that is when it comes to the clear and definitive verses, not the ambiguous verses. If we were to do otherwise, then we be among those people who have deviation in their heart and follow the ambiguous parts of the Qur’an as a result.

An example of this ambiguity which some people follow is that they take an ayah that is not directed at the Muslims as a whole but is exclusively dealing with the rulers or specifically directed at military units of the Muslims in a particular circumstance and then treat it as if it applied generally to all Muslims.

In the past, the Khawaarij used to take some ayaat that were revealed about the disbelievers and apply them to the Muslims. In this day and age, they take the ayaat related to warfare which are not applicable to the general masses of Muslims and treat them as if they were.

For example, they might do that with Allah’s statement:

And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know but whom Allah knows. [8:60]

Although the wording of this ayah indicates that it applies generally to all Muslims, the intended message is specifically for the rulers and their deputies. For the individual Muslims are not capable of making these type of specific preparations in this day and age. Is an individual Muslim able to ready airplanes, tanks, or advanced weapons of wars?

Another example is with Allah’s statement:

And let them take all the precautions and bear arms. Those who disbelieve wish, if you were negligent of your arms and your provisions, to attack you in a single rush [4:102]

This ayah is regarding those Muslims who are engaged in battle under the direction of an official leader; we cannot understand this to mean that the average Muslim must carry lethal weapons around with him. This ayah is talking about those who are engaged in jihaad, in the midst of battle, and wanting to perform the prayer – the salaah al-Khawf, that is. Clearly, this ayah was not revealed about Muslims during times of peace or meant to be applied at all times.

So as you can see, this issue of not paying close attention to who is it that the Qur’an and the Sunnah are addressing in their texts is one of the most dangerous means that the People of Innovation who follow the ambiguous texts use. It is to Allah that we complain and in Him besides Whom there is no Lord that we trust.
