Seeking Refuge in Allah: al-Tafsir al-Muyassar

The book al-Tafsir al-Muyassar is a contemporary abridged tafsir commissioned to plainly explain each ayah or short passage of the Qur’an in its margins. Before providing an explanation of surah al-Fatihah, the authors included these brief words on the isti’aadhah – or seeking refuge with Allah prior to reciting the Qur’an:

al-Isti’aadhah – Seeking Refuge

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytaan

Allah has legislated that any person who recites the Qur’an should seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytaan by saying:

So when you recite the Qur’an seek refuge in Allah from the accursed shaytaan [16:98]

That is because the Qur’an is a guidance for mankind and a cure for what is in the chests, while the shaytaan is the cause of evil and misguidance. So Allah commanded every person who recites the Qur’an to seek Allah’s protection for himself against the accursed shaytaan, his whisperings and his party.

The scholars are unanimously agreed that the isti’aadhah is not an ayah of the Qur’an, which is why it is not written in the mushafs.

The meaning of

I seek refuge in Allah

is: I seek aid and protection in Allah alone.

from the shaytaan

i.e. from every insolent and rebellious Jinn or human being who wants to divert me away from the obedience of my Lord and reciting His Book.

accursed

i.e. expelled from Allah’s mercy.
