Some Benefits from the End of Surah al-Fatihah: ibn ‘Uthaymeen

Allah concludes surah al-Fatihah by saying:

Guide us to the Straight Way * The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray. [1:6-7]

Sheikh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen mentioned a number of benefits derived from these ayaat, including:

One of the stylistic elements of the Qur’an is that it generally mentions negative things in decreasing order, moving from worst to less worse. Here, Allah mentioned those who have earned His anger before those who have gone astray. This is because their opposition to the truth was much more extreme than those who went astray, for it is very difficult for someone who opposes the truth despite knowing it to return to following the truth compared to someone who simply opposes the truth out of ignorance.

And he also mentioned:

Departing from the Straight Path is either the result of ignorance or obstinance.

Those who went astray due to obstinance are the ones who have earned Allah’s anger, with the Jews being the foremost of this category.

And the others went went astray due to ignorance are all those who do not know the truth, with the Christians being the foremost of this category. That is as it relates to the state of the Christians before Allah sent the Prophet. However after he was sent they knew the truth but opposed it, and so they and the Jews became the same, with both of them being those who have earned Allah’s anger.
