Assorted Qur’an Benefits #22

What follows is a collection of benefits originally posted on our Facebook page and Telegram Channel in the latter part of December 2017:

♦ Allah does not Charge a Soul Beyond its Ability

Imam ibn Jarir al-Tabari mentioned the following narration in part of his famous tafsir:

… Regarding the ayah:

Allah does not charge a soul beyond its ability [2:286]

ibn ‘Abbaas said: This is referring to the believers – Allah has made the matter of their religion easy for them. For Allah said:

and He has not placed any difficulty upon you in the religion [22:78]

and He said:

Allah wants ease for you and He does not want hardship for you [2:185]

and He said:

Have taqwa of Allah as much as you are able [64:16]

[Tafsir al-Tabari 6/131]

A Description of the Munafiqoon

Allah describes the munafiqoon in the beginning of surah al-Baqarah by saying:

Those are the ones who have purchased misguidance in exchange for guidance. So their transaction has not brought any profit, not were they guided. [2:16]

The great mufassir Abu Ja’far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari mentioned the following narration in part of his tafsir of this ayah:

… Regarding Allah’s statement, “So their transaction has not brought any profit” Qatadah said:

By Allah, you have seen them! They went from guidance to misguidance, from unity to division, from security to fear, and from the Sunnah to innovation.

[Tafsir al-Tabari 1/316-317. And ibn Kathir also relayed this narration from ibn Jarir in his own tafsir.]

*Translator’s note: Qatadah ibn Dimaa’ah was one of the important mufassiroon in the generation of the taabi’oon, and he was a student of Abdullah ibn Mas’ood.

Sincere Repentance

Allah commands the believers in surah al-Tahreem:

O you believed, repent to Allah with a sincere repentance… [66:8]

Ibn Kathir mentioned the following narration in his explanation of this ayah:

Ibn Abi Haatim said … that Abu ‘Amr ibn al-‘Alaa’ heard al-Hasan say:

Sincere repentance is that you hate the sin just as you had previously loved it, and that you seek forgiveness for that sin whenever you are remember it.

[Tafsir ibn Kathir 8/169]

The Deep Knowledge of ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ood

al-Haafidh ibn Kathir mentioned the following words in part of the introduction to his famous explanation of the Qur’an:

…Masrooq said: ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ood said, “By Allah, besides Whom their is no other deity worthy of worship, there is not a single surah of the Qur’an which was revealed except that I know when it was revealed. And there is not a single ayah in the Qur’an which was revealed except that I know regarding whom it was revealed. And if I knew of anyone who was more knowledgeable than me that I could reach by camel, then I would travel to him.”

And all of this was true and honest. This is an example of a person telling others of what he knows about himself that they might not know. And that is something permitted if there is a need to do so. This is like what Allah told us about Yusuf when Yusuf was addressing the ruler of Egypt and said:

Place me in authority over the storehouses of the land. I will certainly be a qualified caretaker [12:55]

And the statement of Allah’s Messenger to “take your recitation of the Qur’an from four people” and then he begin the list with ibn Mas’ood is sufficient praise and commendation for him.

[Tafsir ibn Kathir 1/52]

The Deep Knowledge of Ibn Jarir al-Tabari

In his epic biographical encyclopedia, Imam al-Dhahabi included the following quote in part of his section on the great mufassir Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari:

Abu Muhammad al-Farghaani said:

One of the books which Muhammad ibn Jarir completed was his book of Tafsir. It is such a book that if a scholar were to claim that he could take it and use its contents alone to write a total of ten other books, with each one of those books dedicated to a separate field of knowledge, he could do it.

[Siyar ‘Alam al-Nubalaa’ 14/273]

The Great Value of Tafsir al-Tabari

Imam al-Dhahabi mentioned the following quote in part of his biographical entry for the great mufassir Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari:

al-Khateeb said: It reached me that the Faqeeh Abu Haamid Ahmad ibn Abi Taahir al-Isfaraayeeni said:

If a person were to travel all the way to China in order to obtain the Tafsir of Muhammad ibn Jarir, that would not be considered a far journey.

[Siyar ‘Alam al-Nubalaa’ 14/272]
