When Repentance Will No Longer Be Accepted: Sheikh Faisal Aal Mubarak

Since it was authored by Imam Abu Zakariyyah Yahya al-Nawawi (d. 676Ah/1277CE), the book Riyadh al-Saliheen has been a hadith collection in constant circulation among the Muslims due the great benefits that it contains. As a result, numerous explanations have been given and written for this book. One such explanation was that of sheikh Faisal Aal Mubarak (d. 1376Ah/1957CE). Like his explanations of many other essential works, sheikh Faisal’s commentary here is very direct and selective. We have marked the original text of Riyah al-Saliheen in blue, and sheikh Faisal’s commentary is in black:

17. On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, he said that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said:

Whoever turns in repentance before the sun rises from the west, Allah will turn in to him in forgiveness.

Reported by Muslim.

The acceptance of repentance is ongoing as long as the door of repentance is open, but when that door is closed it will not be accepted.

Allah said:

The Day that some of the signs of your Lord will come, no one will benefit from his faith if he had not believed before or earned any good through his faith. [6:158]

meaning: when the sun rises from the west then a disbeliever will not find any benefit from believing at that time nor will a sinner find any benefit in repenting after that.

18. On the authority of Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab, that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

Allah the Mighty and Majestic accepts the repentance of a slave until he gharghar.

This was reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said, “A hasan hadith.”

al-Ghargharah is when the soul reaches one’s throat.

Allah said:

But there is no repentance for those who continue to do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, “Indeed, I have repented now,” or of those who die while they are disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful punishment. [4:18]

And He said:

And when they saw Our punishment, they said,” We believe in Allah alone and disbelieve in that which we used to associate with Him.” * But their faith did not benefit them once they saw Our punishment. [40:84-85]
