Assorted Qur’an Benefits #21

What follows is a collection of benefits originally posted on our Facebook page and Telegram Channel in the first part of December 2017:

♦ Ibn Kathir’s Approach to the Qiraa’aat in his Tafsir

The great mufassir al-haafidh Ismaa’eel ibn Kathir explained the approach he took in his tafsir towards linguistic discussion and the qiraa’aat by writing:

Regarding the words “Jibreel” and “Meekaa’eel” [c.f. 2:98], there are a number of linguistic issues and different recitations which are mentioned in the books of language and qiraa’aat. But we will not elongate this book of ours by going through these topics unless the meaning of an ayah centers around that or unless a legal ruling related to an ayah hinges on one of those things. In Allah do we place our trust, and it is from Him that we seek aid.”

[Tafsir ibn Kathir 1/343]

♦ Continuing Rewards

Allah says in surah al-Tin:

We have certainly created man in the best form * then we return him to the lowest of the low * Except for those who believe and do righteous good deeds – for them there is a reward without interruption [95:4-6]

Commenting on these latter two ayaat in his book of tafsir, ibn al-Jawzi wrote:

Ibrahim al-Nakaa’i said: When a believer reaches old age and is no longer able to perform good deeds, what he used to do will continue to be written for him. This is as Allah says, “For them there is a reward without interruption”.

Ibn Qutaybah said: What it means is – except for those who believed while they were strong and able-bodied. For them, old age will not be a time of them losing out even if they are incapable of performing good deeds. For Allah knows that were it not for their lack of ability, they would not have discontinued doing good deeds. So, then, He will still grant them the rewards for that.

♦ An Encouragement to Contemplate the Qur’an

Allah mentions the following well-known ayah in the middle of surah al-Nisaa’:

Do they not carefully consider the Qur’an?! If it was from other than Allah, then they would have found much contradiction in it. [4:82]

Commenting on this and the surrounding ayaat, sheikh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen said:

There are a number of benefits contained in these noble ayaat. One of them is an encouragement to contemplate the Qur’an. This is derived from the reprimand of those who do not contemplate it. For if those who do not contemplate the Qur’an are reprimanded, then whose who do contemplate it would be commended and praised. So therefore, this ayah contains an encouragement to contemplate the Qur’an.

[Tafsir surah al-Nisaa’ pg. 323-324]

♦ A Warning Against Spreading Unverified News

al-Haafidh Ismaa’eel ibn Kathir mentions the following in part of his tafsir of surah al-Nisaa’:

Allah’s statement:

And when some matter regarding public safety or fear comes to them, they spread it…  [4:83]

This ayah is a reprimand of those who are hasty in matters before ascertaining the reality of the situation. So they inform others about some news, disseminating and spreading it when in fact it could not be true at all.

♦ A Warning Against Gossiping

The great mufassir Ismaa’eel ibn Kathir al-Dimishqi mentioned the following point in part of his tafsir:

It comes in both al-Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah that Allah’s Messenger forbade us from engaging in qeela wa qaal

meaning: being one who talks a lot about what people are saying without first verifying those statements, taking any pause to reflect, or seeking to ascertain the truth of the matter.

[Tafsir ibn Kathir 3/367]

♦ The Blessing of Obeying Allah and His Messenger

Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned the following benefit in one of his works:

Allah has informed us that the people who obey Him and who obey His Messenger are those who have been endowed with blessings. This entails that others outside of this category are the people deserving of Allah’s wrath and the misguided ones. For Allah says:

And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger – those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the siddiqqoon, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions. * That is the bounty from Allah, and sufficient is Allah as Knower. [4:70]

So Allah informs us that that excellent companionship which they have been blessed with can only be attained by those who obey Him and obey His Messenger. And He also tells us that that is a bounty from Him, and that He is all-knowing of where best to place His bounty and to whom exactly He should give it.
