Assorted Qur’an Benefits #15

What follows is a collection of benefits originally posted on our Facebook page during August and September of 2016, a period which coincided with the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah and the Hajj:

♦ Restraining Oneself from Base Desires

Allah says in surah al-Naazi’aat:

But as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from desires. * Verily, Paradise will be his abode. [79:40-41]

Commenting on this in his tafsir, Imam al-Baghawi wrote:

He restrained himself from the forbidden matters which he desired.

Muqatil said: This is a man who was intending to perform an act of disobedience but then he remembered his appointment for the recompense of his deeds and so abandoned doing that act.”

[Tafsir al-Baghawi 8/331]

And If They Turn Away …

In surah al-Maa’idah, Allah instructs His Messenger:

And if they turn away – then know that Allah only intends to afflict them for some of their sins. [5:49]

al-Haafidh Ismaa’eel ibn Kathir commented on this in his famous tafsir by writing:

And if they turn away” i.e. from you judging between them with the truth and they oppose Allah’s divine legislation, “then know that Allah only intends to afflict them for some of their sins” – meaning: know that this is occurring in accordance with Allah’s divine decree, and His wisdom regarding them is to divert them from guidance due to what they had of previous sins which necessitated their misguidance and punishment.

[Tafsir ibn Kathir 3/131]

Immediate and Delayed Punishments for Sins

Allah addresses His Messenger in surah al-Maa’idah by saying:

And if they turn away – then know that Allah only intends to afflict them for some of their sins. [5:49]

In his commentary on this ayah, sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di wrote:

Sins have both immediate and delayed punishments. And one of the gravest punishments is for a slave to be tested [in his faith] and for the abandonment of following the Messenger to be made pleasant-seeming to him. That is a consequence of his sinful behavior.

[Taysir al-Kareem al-Rahman pg. 258]

♦ Increased Dhikr During the First Ten Days of Dhu’l-Hijjah

In surah al-Hajj, Allah says:

“And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass – * That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on the Well-Known Days …” [22:27-28]

Commenting on this in his book of tafsir, Imam al-Baghawi wrote:

And mention the name of Allah on the Well-Known Days” – meaning the first ten days of the month of Dhu’l-Hijjah, according to the position of most of the mufassiroon regarding this phrase.

[Tafsir al-Baghawi 5/380]

♦ Virtues of the First Ten Days of Dhu’l-Hijjah

Ibn Kathir mentions a number of virtues of the first ten days of the month of Dhu’l-Hijjah in his tafsir, including:

Imam Ahmed relayed a report from Jaabir – the contents of which are from the Prophet – that the first ten of Dhu’l-Hijjah are the ten that Allah swears by in His statement

And by the Dawn * and by the ten nights [89:1-2]

[Tafsir ibn Kathir 5/416]

♦ Discharging Your Duties Before Death Strikes

Allah says in surah al-Munaafiqoon:

And spend from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, ‘My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous.'” [63:10]

Imam al-Baghawi commented on this ayah by writing:

The intended meaning of “righteousness” here is: the Hajj.

Both al-Dhahhaak and ‘Atiyyah related that ibn ‘Abbaas said, “Every person who died having money but without having dischargeing his zakaat and having been able to physically endure the Hajj but without performing it will ask to be returned to this life after his death.”

[Tafsir al-Baghawi 8/135]

♦ This Day I Have Perfected For You Your Religion

In the beginning of surah al-Ma’idah, Allah announces:

This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. [5:3]

Commenting on this in his book of tafsir, Imam al-Baghawi wrote:

This ayah was revealed on a Friday, on the Day of ‘Arafah, after ‘Asr, during the Farewell Pilgrimage while the Prophet (ﷺ) was observing the rituals of Hajj at Mount ‘Arafah upon his camel, al-‘Adhbaa’. The weight of the revelation was so great that the camel’s legs nearly broke and it knelt down.

[Tafsir al-Baghawi 3/13]

♦ The Farewell Pilgrimage

Sheikh Muhammad al-Shawkaani mentioned the following narration in the beginning of his explanation of surah al-Nasr [110]:

It was recorded by Ibn Abi Shaybah, ‘Abd ibn Humayd, al-Bazzaar, Abu Ya’la, ibn Mardawayh, and al-Bayhaqi in al-Dalaa’il that ibn ‘Umar said:

This surah was revealed to Allah’s Messenger in the middle of the Days of Tashreeq while he was at Mina, and that was on his Farewell Pilgrimage. It was:

When the help of Allah comes, and the conquest * And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitidudes * Then exalt your Lord with praises and seek His forgiveness. Indeed, He is the Oft-Forgiving

So Allah’s Messenger recognized that this was his farewell.

[Fath al-Qadeer pg. 1664. Ibn Kathir also mentions a similar narration]
