“Whoever desires ‘Izzah …”: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote the following in part of his tafsir of surah Fatir:

Allah’s statement:

Whoever desires ‘izzah, then to Allah belongs all the ‘izzah [35:10]

In this noble ayah, Allah is making it clear that whoever desires ‘izzah [dominance and power], then all of that belongs to Allah alone. So seek it from Him and take the steps to attain it by obeying Him. For whoever obeys Allah, then Allah will grant him ‘izzah in both this life and the next. On the other hand, those who worship idols in order to achieve ‘izzah through this worship, or those who take the disbelievers rather than believers as allies in an effort to gain ‘izzah in their eyes, these people are immersed in misguidance and blinded to the truth, for they are seeking ‘izzah from a lowly place.

And this meaning which this noble ayah points to has come clearly in a number of ayaat throughout Allah’s Book. For instance:

And they have taken false deities as gods alongside Allah in order that these would be a source of ‘izzah for them * Certainly not! Those false deities will reject their worship and will be opponents to them! [19:81-82]

And His statement:

Those who take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do they seek ‘izzah with them? Certainly ‘izzah belongs to Allan entirely. [4:139]

And His statement:

And let not their speech grieve you. Indeed, ‘izzah belongs entirely to Allah. He is the Hearing, the Knowing. [10:65]

And His statement:

They say, “If we return to al-Madinah, those with more ‘izzah will surely expel the more humble.” And to Allah belongs the ‘izzah, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know. [63:8]

And His statement:

Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of ‘izzah, above what they describe. [37:180]

And the word ‘izzah means: dominance and power.

*** [A small linguistic discussion has been omitted from the translation here] ***

And an example of this meaning comes in Allah’s statement:

… and he ‘azzanee in speech [38:23]

meaning: he overcame and overpowered me in argumentation.

And there are some scholars who say that the meaning of:

whoever desires ‘izzah

is: whoever wants to know who holds the ‘izzah. However, what we have mentioned is more sound and correct than this, and Allah knows best.

  6. JazakAllahu Khayr for everything on this blog. Every article is beneficial. Some day would want to download and save all of this to print and read

If you have a way for me to do this up until the most recent article please do let me know

    JazakAllahu Khayr

    • Wa iyyaak! We are always happy to hear if others have found the site beneficial, alhamdulillah.

We do not currently have any options to download the content on the website, but I have given some thought to duplicating and organizing the translations onto Scribd, which could then potentially be downloaded. However, such a project would be a significant undertaking, as the website currently has more than 700 articles and publishes about 100 new articles per year.

If we go forward and create a Scribd page for the Tulayhah content, we will certainly announce it. In the meantime, we will maintain the website in the free WordPress format so that the website and its contents are not at risk of being taken down if fees were not to be paid.

Also, we hope to venture into publishing our first eBook this year, inshaAllaah. So that is one item that can be downloaded when it is available inshaAllaah.

      BaarakAllahu feek!

      • Wa feekum BarakAllah!

Is there a way to get all of your work? I prefer reading with my family on paper. If it is possible to somehow get all your work on printed paper I would love to preserve it In’shaa’Allāh. Like a simple text document of everything.

JazakAllahu Khayr for your work. I am so very pleased to have come across your page and I share it with as many a people as I know will benefit. Please do know that you have someone here who benefits from your work and I know people who benefit from your work immensely.

Thank you so much for translating Tafseer content and other beneficial ‘ilm.

May Allah sweeten you and team and be pleased with you and grant you all and your dear ones Jannah without reckoning. Aameen.

        Continue this work Allahumma Baarik!

        Ramadan Mubarak!
Keeping you and team close in ‘adeeyahh!

        JazakumAllahul Jannatul Firdaws wal ‘Aala.

      • May Allah reward you for all your encouragement and kind words. Ameen to all of your du’aa, and for you as well! Alhamdulillaah, we are only trying to accurately transmit the explanations of the scholars. In our estimation, this is far better and more beneficial than any other type of content which we could produce. So we are always happy to hear that it is reaching others and benefiting them.

Currently, we don’t have any sort of master document with all of the content on this website. In the future we may try to create a Scribd document to house and organize all of this content, or a series of Scribd documents (such as one for tafsir articles organized by surah, another for ‘uloom al-Qur’an articles arranged by topic, another for the mufassir profiles, perhaps ones for the different books of tafsir that we frequently translate, etc).

We have made some efforts to better organize the material on the website though, primarily using the drop-down menus at the top and creating some pages. You might explore:

        Tafsir by Surah or Juz’
        ‘Uloom al-Qur’an Article Index
        Mufassir Profiles

InshaAllaah if we create a Scribd document or something similar which collects all of our currently available work, we will make sure to announce it. Until then, perhaps you can use the organizational tools mentioned above to select articles that you would like to read with your family and create documents to use.

May Allah bless you and your family!

      • Aameen! Wa iyyakum
        Helpful, thank you. And Noted!
        Okay InshaaaAllah
        JazakAllahu Khayr
