“Whoever desires ‘Izzah …”: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote the following in part of his tafsir of surah Fatir:

Allah’s statement:

Whoever desires ‘izzah, then to Allah belongs all the ‘izzah [35:10]

In this noble ayah, Allah is making it clear that whoever desires ‘izzah [dominance and power], then all of that belongs to Allah alone. So seek it from Him and take the steps to attain it by obeying Him. For whoever obeys Allah, then Allah will grant him ‘izzah in both this life and the next. On the other hand, those who worship idols in order to achieve ‘izzah through this worship, or those who take the disbelievers rather than believers as allies in an effort to gain ‘izzah in their eyes, these people are immersed in misguidance and blinded to the truth, for they are seeking ‘izzah from a lowly place.

And this meaning which this noble ayah points to has come clearly in a number of ayaat throughout Allah’s Book. For instance:

And they have taken false deities as gods alongside Allah in order that these would be a source of ‘izzah for them * Certainly not! Those false deities will reject their worship and will be opponents to them! [19:81-82]

And His statement:

Those who take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do they seek ‘izzah with them? Certainly ‘izzah belongs to Allan entirely. [4:139]

And His statement:

And let not their speech grieve you. Indeed, ‘izzah belongs entirely to Allah. He is the Hearing, the Knowing. [10:65]

And His statement:

They say, “If we return to al-Madinah, those with more ‘izzah will surely expel the more humble.” And to Allah belongs the ‘izzah, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know. [63:8]

And His statement:

Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of ‘izzah, above what they describe. [37:180]

And the word ‘izzah means: dominance and power.

*** [A small linguistic discussion has been omitted from the translation here] ***

And an example of this meaning comes in Allah’s statement:

… and he ‘azzanee in speech [38:23]

meaning: he overcame and overpowered me in argumentation.

And there are some scholars who say that the meaning of:

whoever desires ‘izzah

is: whoever wants to know who holds the ‘izzah. However, what we have mentioned is more sound and correct than this, and Allah knows best.
