Follow Allah’s Path, and Do Not Follow Other Paths: Sheikh Saalih al-Fawzan

Sheikh Saalih al-Fawzan was asked the following question:

Question: What is the explanation of Allah’s statement:

And this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow other ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you in order that you may exercise al-taqwa. [6:153]

Response: In the name of Allah, al-Rahman al-Raheem. All praise belongs of Allah, Lord of all creation. May Allah’s salutations be upon our Prophet, Muhammad, and upon his family and all of his companions.

In this ayah, Allah mentions the tenth of ten commandments which come in surah al-An’aam, beginning with Him saying:

Say, “Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. That you not associate anything in worship or divinity with Him … [6:151]

That is the first of them, which is a prohibition of al-shirk, and the tenth is this ayah:

And this is My siraat, which is straight … [6:153]

A siraat is a path, and the intended meaning of this here is: the path which leads to Allah. Others say it means Islam, others that it refers to the Messenger, others that it is the Qur’an – and all of these are correct; all of these are the straight path.

so follow it

Cling fast to it and traverse upon it

and do not follow other ways

Do not leave this path for any others. This Siraat is the clear path, while the various other ways are unclear and are paths of destruction. This is why Allah says:

and do not follow other ways for you will be separated from His way

and there is a shaytaan waiting upon each one of these various other paths, calling the people to it, as has come in the hadeeth.

for you will be separated from His way

This has He instructed you

The message being: adhere to the straight path. He has commanded you with this

in order that you may exercise al-taqwa

in hope that you will exercise taqwa of Allah by placing a barrier between yourselves and His punishment

al-Taqwa is: doing what Allah has commanded you to do in hopes of reward, and leaving what Allah has forbidden for you in fear of punishment. This is what al-taqwa is. It is called al-taqwa because it is guarding against Allah’s punishment.

And this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow other ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that in order that …

you may thereby traverse upon this path

 you may exercise al-taqwa

of Allah, and that you might fear Him and place your hopes in Him. This is one of the things which Allah has commanded you, and it is a commandment which will remain in place from now until the Day of Judgement. Every creature from the time of the Qur’an’s revelation until the Day of Judgement is obligated to cling fast to this command:

And this is My path, which is straight
