Bringing you out from the Darknessess into the Light: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote the following in his tafsir of surah al-Hadeed:

Allah’s statement:

It is He who sends down clear signs upon His Servant that He may bring you out from the darknesses into the light [57:9]

In this noble ayah, Allah mentions that it is He who sends down ayaat bayinaat – meaning “clear signs” – upon His slave Muhammad (ﷺ), and that is referring to the Qur’an. This is done so that – by means of this tremendous Qur’an which eloquently conveys the clear signs – the people might be taken out of darkness, i.e the darknesses of disbelief and disobedience, into the noor of al-tawheed and guidance.

And this meaning indicated by this noble ayah has also come clear as day in Allah’s statement in surah al-Talaaq:

So have taqwa of Allah and keep your duty to Him, O men of understanding who have believed! – Allah has indeed sent a Reminder down to you * A Messenger reciting Allah’s ayaat to you in order that those who believe and do righteous good deeds might be brought out from the darknesses into the light. [65:10-11]

This ayah of surah al-Talaaq makes it clear that the ayah of surah al-Hadeed is a general statement which has been further specified elsewhere. And this ayah also makes it clear that no one is taken out of the darknesses into the light due to this Qur’an except those whom Allah grants the accord to have eemaan and perform righteous good deeds. For His statement is surah al-Hadeed:

that He may bring you out from the darknesses … [57:9]

is predicated on the presence of eemaan and righteous good deeds, as is shown by His statement:

… in order that those who believe and do righteous good deeds might be brought out from the darknesses … [65:11]

So the Qur’an’s call to al-eemaan and being taken out of the darknesses of disbelief by its noor is something general, but being granted the accord to actually be taken out of the darknesses into the light is something specific only to those to whom Allah grants it. This is as the aforementioned ayaat of surah al-Talaaq demonstrate, and Allah also said:

Allah calls to the home of peace, and guides whom He wills to a Straight Path. [10:25]

And the contents of this noble ayah regarding the Qur’an being a light by which Allah takes the believers out of the darknesses into the light comes clearly in many other ayaat in Allah’s Book, such as His statement:

O mankind, there has come to you a conclusive proof from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a clear light. [4:147]

And His statement:

Our Messenger has come to you, making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking much. There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book. * By which Allah guides those who pursue His pleasure to the ways of peace and brings them out from darknesses into the light, by His permission, and guides them to a straight path. [5:15-16]

And His statement:

So believe in Allah and His Messenger and the light which We have sent down.* [64:8]

And His statement:

So they who have believed in him [the Prophet], honored him, supported him and followed the light which was sent down with him – it is those who will be the successful. [5:157]

And His statement:

but We have made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And indeed, you guide to a straight path [42:52]

[Adhwaa’ al-Bayaan 7/544]

*Translator’s Note: In his brief tafsir of this ayah from surah al-Taghabun (64:80), sheikh al-Shinqitee included the following point of benefit:

And here it is called Noor (light) because it lifts the darknesses of ignorance, doubt, al-shirk, and hypocrisy.

[Adhwaa’ al-Bayaan 7/201-202]
