The Virtues of Surah al-Ikhlaas: Sheikh Saalih al-Fawzan

Sheikh Saalih al-Fawzan, a member of the Council of Senior Scholars as well as Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Fataawaa of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was asked the following question:

Question: What is the veracity of the hadeeth, “whoever recites surah al-Ikhlaas (102) one thousand times within the course of a night, then he has purchased himself from Allah”?

Response: As for surah al-Ikhlaas, it is a tremendous surah about which the Prophet (ﷺ) informed us in a number of authentic reports that “it is equal to one third of the Qur’an”, and that is due to the descriptions and attributes of Allah that it contains. For it is a surah which is entirely devoted to the subject of tawheed, and this is why it is named “surah al-Ikhlaas“. And the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “recite it along with the surah al-Falaq (113) and surah al-Nas (114) before sleeping”. This encouragement to recite it is due to the great virtue it holds and that it is equal to one third of the Qur’an.

As for hadeeth that the questioner mentioned about reciting it one thousand times being a means of purchasing oneself from Allah, then I have not seen any source for this. al-Haafidh ibn Kathir has mentioned numerous ahaadeeth regarding the virtues of this surah in his tafsir; he mentioned them at length and then discussed them but he did not mention this particular hadeeth anywhere in that. So I do not know its status, however the authentic reports regarding the virtue and greatness of this surah are sufficient, alhamdulillaah.

And likewise regarding the virtue of reading and reciting this surah and doing so in abundance due to the great good that it contains, the Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite it along with surah al-Kaafiroon (109) in the two-raka’a prayer after completing tawaf as well as in the two-raka’a sunnah prayer before Fajr. This was because of what these two surahs involved of tawheed and singling out Allah alone in worship. For surah al-Kaafiroon contains singling out Allah alone to be worshiped, and surah al-Ikhlaas contains singling out Allah alone in His lordship and in His names and attributes.
