Whoever Denies One Messenger has Denied Them All: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee mentioned the following point of great benefit in part of his tafsir of surah al-Qamar:

Whoever denies one single messenger has denied all of the messengers, and whoever denies one warner has denied all of the warners. This is because the basis of all the messengers’ call was one and the same, which was the substance of Laa ilaaha illAllaah – there is no deity worthy of worship in truth except Allah. This is as Allah has made clear in His statement:

And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, (saying), “Worship Allah and avoid all that is worshiped besides Allah [16:36]

And His statement:

And We sent not before you any messenger except that We revealed to him that, “There is no deity except Me, so worship Me.” [21:25]

And His statement:

And ask those We sent before you of Our messengers; have We made any besides the Most Merciful as deities to be worshiped? [43:45]

And Allah made it clear that whoever denies one of them has denied them all in His statement:

… and they say, “We believe in some but reject others,” and wish to adopt a way in between * Those are the disbelievers, truly [4:150-151]

And this is also indicated by His statement:

We make no distinction between any of His messengers [2:285]

And His statement:

We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Allah [2:136]

And His statement:

And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers and make no distinction between any of them, We shall give them their rewards [4:152]

And Allah has made it clear in surah al-Shu’araa’ that denial of a single messenger is a denial of all of the messengers, and that comes in His statement:

The people of Nuh belied the Messengers [26:105]

and He then clarified that their denial of the messengers was for no other reason than their denial of Nuh alone, as He indicated when He singled Nuh out in that in His speech from His statement:

When their brother Nuh said to them: “Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? [26:106]

until His statement:

He said: “My Lord! Verily, my people have belied me” [26:107]

And likewise, Allah’s statement:

‘Aad belied the messengers [26:123]

and then He proceeded to clarify that that occurred through their denial of Hud alone, as He indicated when He singled out Hud with His statement:

When their brother Hud said to them: “Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? [26:124]

And likewise in His speech regarding the story of Saalih and his people, or Lut and his people, or Shu’aib and the Ashab al-Aykah, as is well-known. This matter is clear and there is no hiding it, and the Prophet’s statement only served to increase it in clarity when he (ﷺ) said, “Indeed, the Prophets and like half-brothers but our deen is one” – meaning that all of them are in accord regarding the foundational matters, even if their respective Divinely ordained legislations may differ in some secondary matters.

[Adhwaa’ al-Bayaan 7/485-486]

Translator’s note: This excerpt takes place in the midst of a larger discussion of the well-known difference of opinion regarding the limits of the Arabic plural [الجمع] and whether it subsumes the dual [المثنّى] or not. This entire discussion takes place under the tafsir of Allah’s statement in surah al-Qamar:

And a warning certainly came to the people of Pharaoh. * They denied Our signs, all of them, so We seized them with a seizure of one Exalted in Might and Perfect in Ability. [54:41-42]

Although this discussion of Arabic linguistics is not given in the English translation, it can be read in the original Arabic here for those who are interested.
