Three Proofs for the Resurrection of the Dead: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee included the following discussion in part of his tafsir of surah al-Baqarah:

قوله تعالى : ( ياأيها الناس اعبدوا ربكم الذي خلقكم والذين من قبلكم لعلكم تتقون ، الذي جعل لكم الأرض فراشا والسماء بناء وأنزل من السماء ماء فأخرج به من الثمرات رزقا لكم ) ـ

Allah’s statement:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ * الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا وَالسَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ رِزْقًا لَّكُمْ

O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous – * He who made for you the earth as a bed and the sky as a ceiling and We sent down rain from the sky and thereby brought forth fruits as provision for you … [2:21-22]

أشار في هذه الآية إلى ثلاثة براهين من براهين البعث بعد الموت ، وبينها مفصلة في آيات أخر : الأول : خلق الناس أولا المشار إليه بقوله ( ياأيها الناس اعبدوا ربكم الذي خلقكم والذين من قبلكم ) ; لأن الإيجاد الأول أعظم برهان على الإيجاد الثاني ، وقد أوضح ذلك في آيات كثيرة كقوله : ( وهو الذي يبدأ الخلق ثم يعيده ) الآية [ 30 \ 27 ] ، وقوله : ( كما بدأنا أول خلق نعيده ) [ 21 \ 104 ] ، وكقوله : ( فسيقولون من يعيدنا قل الذي فطركم أول مرة ) [ 36 \ 79 ] ، وقوله : ( قل يحييها الذي أنشأها أول مرة ) ، وقوله : ( أفعيينا بالخلق الأول بل هم في لبس ) الآية [ 50 \ 15 ] ، وكقوله : ( ياأيها الناس إن كنتم في ريب من البعث فإنا خلقناكم من تراب ) [ 22 \ 5 ] ، وكقوله : ( ولقد علمتم النشأة الأولى ) الآية [ 56 \ 62 ] . ـ

This ayah points to three proofs for the resurrection of the dead, and that topic is clarified elsewhere in more detail.

The first proof: The initial creation of mankind points to this, as He said:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ

O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you

For the initial act of bringing them into existence is the greatest proof of their being brought back into existence a second time. Allah made this point clear in a number of different ayaat, such as His statement:

وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَبْدَأُ الْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُ

It is He who initiated the creation and then He will repeat it [30:27]

until the end of the ayah. And His statement:

كَمَا بَدَأْنَا أَوَّلَ خَلْقٍ نُّعِيدُهُ

Just as We initiated the creation the first time, We shall repeat it [21:104]

and His statement:

فَسَيَقُولُونَ مَن يُعِيدُنَا ۖ قُلِ الَّذِي فَطَرَكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ

And they will say, “Who will restore us?” Say, “He who brought you forth the first time.” [17:51]

And His statement:

قُلْ يُحْيِيهَا الَّذِي أَنشَأَهَا أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ

Say, “He who produced them the first time will give them life” [36:79]

And His statement:

أَفَعَيِينَا بِالْخَلْقِ الْأَوَّلِ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ فِي لَبْسٍ مِّنْ خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ

Did We fail in the first creation? But they are in confusion over a new creation. [50:15]

and such as His statement:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِن كُنتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِّنَ الْبَعْثِ فَإِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن تُرَابٍ

O People, if you should be in doubt about the Resurrection, then [consider that] indeed, We created you from dust [22:5]

and His statement:

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

And you have already known the first creation, so will you not consider? [56:62]

ولذا ذكر تعالى أن من أنكر البعث فقد نسي الإيجاد الأول ، كما في قوله : ( وضرب لنا مثلا ونسي خلقه ) الآية [ 36 \ 78 ] ، وقوله : ( ويقول الإنسان أئذا ما مت لسوف أخرج حيا أولا يذكر الإنسان أنا خلقناه من قبل ولم يك شيئا ) [ 19 \ 67 ، 68 ] ، ثم رتب على ذلك الدليل بقوله : ( فوربك لنحشرنهم ) الآية [ 19 \ 68 ] إلى غير ذلك من الآيات . ـ

So in this manner Allah mentioned that those who reject the resurrection after death have forgotten their initial creation, just as He said:

وَضَرَبَ لَنَا مَثَلًا وَنَسِيَ خَلْقَهُ

And he presents for Us an example and forgets his [own] creation. [36:78]

and His statement:

وَيَقُولُ الْإِنسَانُ أَإِذَا مَا مِتُّ لَسَوْفَ أُخْرَجُ حَيًّا * أَوَلَا يَذْكُرُ الْإِنسَانُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ يَكُ شَيْئًا

And the disbeliever says, “When I have died, am I going to be brought forth alive?” * Does man not remember that We created him before, while he was nothing? [19:66-67]

and He then brought a proof for that with His statement:

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَحْشُرَنَّهُمْ

So by your Lord, We will surely gather them… [19:68]

as well as elsewhere in the Qur’an.

البرهان الثاني : خلق السماوات والأرض المشار إليه بقوله : ( الذي جعل لكم الأرض فراشا والسماء بناء ) [ ص: 18 ] لأنهما من أعظم المخلوقات ، ومن قدر على خلق الأعظم فهو على غيره قادر من باب أحرى . وأوضح الله تعالى هذا البرهان في آيات كثيرة كقوله تعالى : ( لخلق السماوات والأرض أكبر من خلق الناس ) [ 40 \ 57 ] ، وقوله : ( أوليس الذي خلق السماوات والأرض بقادر على أن يخلق مثلهم بلى وهو الخلاق العليم ) [ 36 \ 81 ] ، وقوله : ( أولم يروا أن الله الذي خلق السماوات والأرض ولم يعي بخلقهن بقادر على أن يحيي الموتى بلى ) [ 46 \ 33 ] ، وقوله : ( أولم يروا أن الله الذي خلق السموات والأرض قادر على أن يخلق مثلهم ) [ 17 \ 99 ] ، وقوله : ( أأنتم أشد خلقا أم السماء بناها رفع سمكها فسواها ) الآية [ 79 \ 27 ] إلى غير ذلك من الآيات . ـ

The second proof: The creation of the heavens and the earth points to that. According to Allah’s statement:

الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا وَالسَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً

He who made for you the earth as a bed and the sky as a ceiling

for these are some of the greatest created things, and whoever is able to create these monumental creations, then He is of course even more able to create anything else. Allah clarified this proof in a number of ayaat, such as His statement:

لَخَلْقُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ خَلْقِ النَّاسِ

The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind [40:57]

and His statement:

أَوَلَيْسَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَىٰ أَن يَخْلُقَ مِثْلَهُم ۚ بَلَىٰ وَهُوَ الْخَلَّاقُ الْعَلِيمُ

Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them? Yes, [it is so]; and He is the Knowing Creator. [36:81]

and His statement:

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّـهَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَلَمْ يَعْيَ بِخَلْقِهِنَّ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَىٰ أَن يُحْيِيَ الْمَوْتَىٰ ۚ بَلَىٰ إِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Do they not see that Allah, who created the heavens and earth and did not fail in their creation, is able to give life to the dead? Yes. Indeed, He is over all things competent. [46:33]

and His statement:

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّـهَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ قَادِرٌ عَلَىٰ أَن يَخْلُقَ مِثْلَهُمْ

Do they not see that Allah, who created the heavens and earth, is [the one] Able to create the likes of them? [99:17]

and His statement:

أَأَنتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ السَّمَاءُ ۚ بَنَاهَا * رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّاهَا

Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? Allah constructed it. * He raised its ceiling and proportioned it. [79:27-28]

as well as in other ayaat throughout the Qur’an.

البرهان الثالث : إحياء الأرض بعد موتها ; فإنه من أعظم الأدلة على البعث بعد الموت ، كما أشار له هنا بقوله : ( وأنزل من السماء ماء فأخرج به من الثمرات رزقا لكم ) وأوضحه في آيات كثيرة كقوله : ( ومن آياته أنك ترى الأرض خاشعة فإذا أنزلنا عليها الماء اهتزت وربت إن الذي أحياها لمحيي الموتى إنه على كل شيء قدير ) [ 41 \ 39 ] ، وقوله : ( وأحيينا به بلدة ميتا كذلك الخروج ) [ 50 \ 11 ] ، يعني : خروجكم من قبوركم أحياء بعد أن كنتم عظاما رميما . وقوله : ( ويحيي الأرض بعد موتها وكذلك تخرجون ) [ 30 \ 19 ] ، وقوله تعالى : ( حتى إذا أقلت سحابا ثقالا سقناه لبلد ميت فأنزلنا به الماء فأخرجنا به من كل الثمرات كذلك نخرج الموتى لعلكم تذكرون ) [ 7 \ 57 ] إلى غير ذلك من الآيات . ـ

The third proof: Allah’s giving life to the earth after its death, for this is one of the greatest proofs for resurrection after death, just as as Allah indicated this point here in His statement:

وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ رِزْقًا لَّكُمْ

and We sent down rain from the sky and thereby brought forth fruits as provision for you

And Allah explained this issue in a number of other ayaat, such as His statement:

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنَّكَ تَرَى الْأَرْضَ خَاشِعَةً فَإِذَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا الْمَاءَ اهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ ۚ إِنَّ الَّذِي أَحْيَاهَا لَمُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىٰ ۚ إِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

And one of His signs is that you see the earth stilled, but when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and grows. Indeed, He who has given it life is the Giver of Life to the dead. Indeed, He is over all things competent. [41:39]

and His statement:

وَأَحْيَيْنَا بِهِ بَلْدَةً مَّيْتًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ الْخُرُوجُ

and We have given life thereby to a dead land. Thus is the bringing forth. [50:11]

meaning: the people being brought out of their graves alive after they had been decayed bones.

And also His statement:

وَيُحْيِي الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا ۚ وَكَذَٰلِكَ تُخْرَجُونَ

 and He brings to life the earth after its lifelessness. And thus will you be brought forth. [30:19]

and His statement:

حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَقَلَّتْ سَحَابًا ثِقَالًا سُقْنَاهُ لِبَلَدٍ مَّيِّتٍ فَأَنزَلْنَا بِهِ الْمَاءَ فَأَخْرَجْنَا بِهِ مِن كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نُخْرِجُ الْمَوْتَىٰ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ

until, when the winds have carried heavy rainclouds, We drive them to a dead land and We send down rain therein and bring forth thereby [some] of all the fruits. Thus will We bring forth the dead; perhaps you may be reminded. [7:57]
