Khutbah on the Qualities of those who Hasten towards Good

All praise belongs to Allah who blesses whichever of His slaves He wills by enabling them to carry out good deeds and abstain from evil acts.

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except for Allah alone, with no partners. It is He whose names and attributes are completely perfect. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger, the most noble of all created beings.

O Allah, bestow your blessings and salutations upon Muhammad, upon his family, upon his companions, and also upon those who follow them in their statements, actions and beliefs.

To proceed: O people! Exercise taqwa of Allah by believing in what He has informed you, by complying with what He has commanded you, and by avoiding what He has forbidden for you. For Allah has described the best of His created beings with these attributes. He said:

Those who are apprehensive from fear of their Lord * And who believe in the signs of their Lord * And who do not associate anything with their Lord * And who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord – * These are the ones who hasten to good deeds, and they are the forerunners to them. [23:57-61]

He described them as having complete faith in Him and His signs, and having complete sincerity towards him and abandoning and all forms of shirk, and with reverential fear and apprehension of the Knower of the Unseen. They carry out their duties to Him and avoid sins. These are the ones who hasten towards every kind of good deed, and so they are the forerunners. There are the ones who race towards every sort of good quality, and so they attain them.

When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked about them, he said, “They are those who pray, fast, give charity, perform the Hajj, free slaves, and then they fear that these things might not be accepted from them.” [Reported by Ahmad (6/159), al-Tirmidhi (#3175), and ibn Maajah (#4198)].

So they have combined carrying out the best of deeds with fear and apprehension of their magnificent Lord. These are the ones who believe in their Lord and know the rights and obligations that are due to Him, so they strive to fulfill those rights and discharge them perfectly, and to avoid falling short or erring in them.

And they enact the conditions of repentance, which include having regret over what one has done, abstaining from the forbidden things, and making a firm resolution to leave any sins and wrongdoings. And they hasten to their Lord, having both fear of His punishment and justice as well as hope and desire for His reward and beneficence. For fear deters them from disobedience and falling short of their duties, while hope spurs them on in obedience and makes the good appealing to them.

Allah is their desire and their goal, and He is the best master and the best helper. And the Messenger is their leader and commander, and he is a bearer of glad tidings, a warner, and an illuminating light. So these ones are the righteous good people, and they are the excellent pious ones.

May Allah bless both me and you by endowing us with these beautiful characteristics, and protect us from any and every reprehensible quality. Indeed, He is giving and generous, kind and merciful.
