In Response to the View that the Hell-fire will Come to an End: Sheikh bin Baaz

Sheikh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez bin Baaz, the former Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was asked the following question:

What is the explanation of Allah’s statement (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed shaytaan):

as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will.

in His statement in surah Hud:

As for those who are wretched, they will be in the Fire, sighing in a high and low tone. * They shall be abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will. Indeed, your Lord is an effecter of what He intends. [11:106-107]

as well as in the following ayah?

Sheikh bin Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him) responded:

The scholars of Tafsir have held different positions regarding this exception, but the best of what has been said is this: that what is intended by this exception is what takes places of the events of Day of Resurrection on the plain of Resurrection and what takes place in the grave – these are these things which make up the exception.

Both the believers and the disbelievers have their designated portions. The believers have their portions of Allah’s pleasures for them in their graves and while standing on the Day of Resurrection, which is what they receive of ease and kindness. Meanwhile, the disbelievers have their portions of punishment in the graves and while standing in front of Allah on the Day of Resurrection. But as for after entering into the Hell-fire, then there is no exemption from that, meaning they are residing in it eternally and forever and they are the disbelievers, while the People of Paradise will reside eternally and forever in the Abode of Pleasure without ever being removed from it or passing away. Their place will never be destroyed. And similarly the disbelievers will reside eternally in the Fire of Hell, according to position of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah they will reside eternally and forever therein. They will never be destroyed nor will they be taken out of it. This is as Allah said regarding the People of the Hell-fire:

They will wish to get out of the Fire, but never are they to emerge therefrom, and for them is an enduring punishment. [5:37]

And He said:

Thus will Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire. [2:167]

And He said in regards to the People of Paradise:

They will abide therein forever [4:57]

So the People of Paradise shall eternally be in a state of pleasure, enjoyment, and delight; this place of theirs shall not be destroyed nor will they be removed from it.

Indeed, the muttaqoon will be in a secure place; * Within gardens and springs, * Wearing fine silk and brocade, facing each other. * Thus. And We will marry them to fair women with large eyes. * They will call therein for every [kind of] fruit – safe and secure. * They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of Hell-fire * As bounty from your Lord. That is what is the great attainment. [44:51-57]

And He said:

Indeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs. * “Enter it in peace, safe.” * And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, they will be brothers, on thrones facing each other. * No fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they be removed. [15:45-48]

There are many verses all of which prove the eternal dwelling of the former group and the eternal dwelling of the latter group, that the People of Paradise will eternally and forever reside in Paradise while the People of the Hell-fire – meaning the disbelievers – will eternally and forever reside in the Hell-fire. However some of the people of the salaf have held the view that there is an end to the Hell-fire and that its inhabitants shall be removed from it following its end or that they will die in it. But this is a strange position in the view of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah without any basis in the authentic texts, and the majority of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah hold the position that the Hell-fire is eternal and without end and that its inhabitants will remain in it always and forever without being destroyed or being removed from it. On the contrary, they will be in constant punishment, remaining therein without any break. That is their enduring abode in which they shall reside for ages without end. This is as our Lord has informed us in His statement:

Thus will Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire. [2:167]

They will wish to get out of the Fire, but never are they to emerge therefrom, and for them is an enduring punishment. [5:37]

every time it subsides We increase them in blazing fire. [17:97]

“So taste! And never will We increase you except in torment.” [78:30]

And whoever says that the Hell-fire has a limited duration, then this is a weak and strange position in the view of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah.

But as for the disobedient ones among the monotheistic believers, then the position of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah is that if they enter the Hell-fire they will not reside in it forever. Rather, they shall remain in it for as long as Allah wills and then Allah will remove them from it out of His bounty and mercy. This is because they died in a state of Islam and upon al-Tawheed although they had acts of disobedience which they died while continuing to do without having repented of them. So if these ones enter the Hell-fire they will not remain in it forever according to the view of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah. This is in contrast to the view of the Khawaarij and the Mu’tazilah and those People of Innovation who follow their ways. But as for Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah, they have united together unanimously upon the position that disobedient believers do not remain eternally in the Hell-fire, rather they remain in it for a limited time which will come to an end.

This is as those authentic ahaadeeth on the authority of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) in both the collections of al-Bukhari and Muslim and elsewhere prove. They show that the Messenger (ﷺ) will make intercession for the disobedient believers and so Allah will set a limit for him [on who he could intercede for] and He then will removed them from the Hell-fire, and then the Messenger will go back and intercede again, and then will intercede again, and then will intercede again. And each time Allah will set a limit for him [on who he could intercede for] and will remove them from the Hell-fire. And the angels, the believers, and the children who died in infancy will make intercession, as it authentically verified from what Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) informed us. Then there will still be a group [of the disobedient monotheistic believers] remaining in the Hell-fire who were not included in these intercessions and then Allah will remove them out of His mercy, as has been authentically verified in a hadeeth of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ). This is the truth about which there is no doubt, and this is the clear position of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah.
