Qualities of the Successful Believers – Part 4/7: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Allah begins surah al-Mu’minoon with 11 ayaat describing the qualities of the successful believers and their ultimate reward. Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee broke his tafsir of these ayaat into seven sections, which we have translated and are in the midst of publishing it as a series. For a guide to the different sections, click here. Sheikh al-Shinqitee continued with the fourth section of his tafsir of the opening of surah al-Mumi’noon as follows:

Allah’s statement:

And those who guard their private parts * Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed – * But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors. [23:5-7]

In these noble ayaat, Allah mentioned that one of the qualities of the successful believers who will inherit al-Firdaws and remain in it forever is that they guard their private parts – meaning from homosexual intercourse, from adultery/fornication, and so on.

And He clarified that their guarding their of private parts does not entail them avoiding their women whom they have right to enjoy, either through the bonds of marriage or by what their right hand possesses – the intended meaning of which is enjoyment of the female slaves.

And He also clarified that there is no blame upon whoever does not guard his private parts from his wife or his female slave, but that whoever seeks to satisfy his private parts with something beyond that – i.e. other than with his wives or female slaves – then he is one of the transgressors. Meaning, he is one of those who transgress and overstep the boundaries that Allah has set, who cross over from what Allah has allowed for him into what Allah has forbade for him.

And the meaning of the word al-‘aadoon (the transgressors) which occurs in this ayah is explained by Allah’s statement regarding the people of Lut:

Do you approach males, out of all of the creation, * and leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? Nay, you are ‘aadoon (a transgressing people). [26:165-166]

And what Allah mentioned here in surah al-Mu’minoon is also mentioned in surah Sa’ala Saa’il [i.e. surah al-Ma’aarij], for He said the following as a commendation of the believers:

And those who guard their private parts * Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed – * But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors – [70:29-31]

[Adhwaa’ al-Bayaan 5/309-310]

Translator’s Note: After completing his explanation of the immediate meanings of these ayaat, al-Shinqitee then diverged into a number of discussions on related issues. He first included one long discussion on some issues of Usool related to general language, then a second clarifying that the rulings on having sexual intercourse with one’s slaves are only applicable to males, then a third regarding the prohibition of masturbation, and finally a fourth regarding the prohibition of mu’tah marriage. These fiqh and usool discussions have been omitted from our translation of this series on the qualities of the successful believers, but those who can read Arabic can follow the links to benefit from al-Shinqitee’s detailed and technical discussions of these topics.
