And We gave Ibrahim good in this life: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

In the end of surah al-Nahl, Allah describes Ibrahim with a number of attributes, including:

And We gave him good in this worldly life [16:122]

The scholars of tafsir have offered a number of different opinions to as what this is referring to. Ibn al-Jawzi summarized these opinions in his tafsir by writing:

There are six different opinions regarding Allah’s statement, “And We gave him good in this worldly life“.

1) That this means a good mention, and this was the opinion of ibn ‘Abbaas.

2) Prophethood, which was the opinion of al-Hasan.

3) Truthful speech, which was the opinion of Mujaahid.

4) The various religions all aligning themselves with him, for all of them align themselves with him and are pleased with him. This was the opinion of Qataadah.

5) That invoking Allah’s blessings upon Ibrahim is paired with invoking Allah’s blessings upon Muhammad (ﷺ). This was the opinion of Muqaatil ibn Hayyaan.

6) Righteous children in his old age, which was mentioned by al-Tha’labi.

[Zaad al-Maseer 4/505]

But as is his norm, ibn al-Jawzi limited himself to summarizing the various positions without selecting a preferred position or weighing their relative merits .

However, sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee offered an especially convincing and insightful explanation in his own tafsir of this ayah. al-Shinqitee made explaining the Qur’an by means of the Qur’an the major theme of his entire tafsir, and through this method he would often provide what he saw to be the most correct position in light of other Qur’anic ayaat:

Allah’s statement:

And We gave him good in this worldly life [16:122]

Some of the scholars say that the good which Allah gave him in this worldly life was good offspring and good praise and commendation.

And that which causes us to incline towards this position is the fact that Allah clarifies that He gave him good offspring because of his sincerity to Allah and his withdrawing himself from the people al-shirk. He also indicated that He made good commendation for him a thing which would be ongoing in the life of this world. Allah said:

So when he had left them and those they worshiped other than Allah, We gave him Ishaaq and Ya’qub, and each [of them] We made a prophet. * And We gave them out of Our mercy, and we made for them a good mention of high honor. [19:49-50]

And He said:

and We placed in his descendants prophethood and scripture [29:27]

And He said:

And grant me an honorable mention in later generations [26:84]
