Three Conditions for the Acceptance of Deeds: Imam al-Shinqitee

In the year 1378 AH (1958 or 1959 CE), the King of Morocco Muhammad the Fifth visited the city of al-Madinah in Saudi Arabia. While he was there, he requested that Sheikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee give a lecture on the subject of the completeness of the Islamic religion. This lecture was comprised of ten points and what follows is an excerpt covering one of those points:

As for the third issue: It is the difference between the actions which are righteous and those which are not.

The Majestic Qur’an has clarified that righteous actions are made complete by three factors, and when any one of them is not in place then the deed contains no benefit for its doer on the Day of Resurrection.

The First: That the action is in accordance with what the Prophet (ﷺ) came with, for Allah says:

And whatsoever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain [59:7]

And He says:

He who obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah [4:80]

And He says:

Say, “If you (really) love Allah then follow me” [3:31]

And He says:

Or have they partners with Allah, who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not allowed? [42:21]

And He says:

Has Allah permitted you (to do so), or do you invent a lie against Allah? [10:59]

The second: That the deeds be sincerely for the sake of Allah, for He said:

And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion [98:5]

And He said:

Say, “Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion. * And I have been commanded to be the first [among you] of the Muslims.” * Say, “Indeed I fear the punishment of a tremendous Day if I should disobey my Lord.” * Say, “Allah [alone] do I worship, sincere to Him in my religion, * So worship what you will besides Him!” [39:11-15]

The third: That the deeds be built on the foundation of a sound ‘aqeedah, for deeds are like a roof and ‘aqeedah is like a foundation. Allah said:

And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer… [4:124]

And He stipulated that with His statement, “while being a believer“.

And regarding the non-believers He said:

And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed [25:23]

And He also said:

Those are the ones for whom there is not in the Hereafter but the Fire. And lost is what they did therein [i.e. in the life of this world], and worthless is what they used to do. [11:16]

As well as other than these ayaat.
