Khutbah on Welcoming Ramadan in the Proper Way: Imam al-Sa’di

The following khutbah was taken from a collection of the Friday sermons written and delivered by sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di:

Khutbah on Welcoming Ramadan in the Proper Way

All praise is due to Allah, the One who made the seasons of goodness as way-stations for His righteous slaves, and who amply prepared various forms of blessings, hospitality and every sort of good for them therein. He made these seasons such that they are repeated every year, so that bounty might be bestowed upon His slaves and they might be protected from sins and the burdens thereof.

I praise Him for making the the night and day in succession for whoever wants to be vigilant, grateful and mindful. And I thank Him for making the month of Ramadan the most virtuous of the noble seasons in which deeds are multiplied and workers make a profit on their goods.

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partners; the Almighty, the Oft-Forgiving. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger; the chosen prophet. O Allah, bestow peace and blessings upon Muhammad, and upon his family and righteous purified companions.

To proceed: O People, Exercise taqwa of Allah:

O you who have believed, have taqwa of Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow – and have taqwa of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do. * And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient. [59:18-19]

Know that a great month and a blessed and noble season is almost upon you! Allah made its fasting one of the pillars of Islam and made its night prayers an encouraged action. So whoever perfects them with eemaan and the expectation of reward, then he has completed his deen and made it upright.

It is by these means that Allah forgives sins and removes their penalties, and it is in this month that the righteous pious ones succeed in their transactions. It is the market-place for those seeking profit, the spoils of war for the victors, a great pleasure for the devoted worshipers, and an opportunity for those who repent and turn back to their Lord. Whoever fasts it and prays its night prayers with eemaan and expecting to be rewarded, then whatever sins he had previously done will be forgiven. And whoever exerts himself in performing good deeds during this month, then he has won the greatest of fortunes and the most complete of portions.

So praise your Lord who gave you life and has kept you alive until you will reach it. Ask Him to aid you in establishing its duties until you you complete and fulfill them. And welcome it with sincere and genuine repentance, and turn to Allah at all times without ceasing. For the one who has truly succeeded is the slave who knows the value of Ramadan and fills it with the various types of worship, such as fasting, charity, reciting the Qur’an, remembrance of Allah, and prayer. So he welcomes Ramadan, overjoyed and in bliss over it, seeking the aid of his Lord for fasting it and performing its nights prayer so that he may thereby attain a great reward!

And you should know that whenever the difficulty of the heat, hunger, thirst and abandoning one’s desires increases, likewise do the reward and recompense become magnified. It is for this reason that Allah singled out this act from amongst all the other acts of worship for Himself. So whoever fasts for Allah’s sake on an extremely hot day, then Allah will quench his thirst from al-Raheeq al-Makhtoom. And whoever leaves off something for the sake of Allah, He will place it for him with something better and he will find that waiting for him with al-Hayy al-Qayoom.

O you believer who leaves off his desires despite the struggle and their intensity – receive glad tidings for you are working for the ultimate rest and happiness of your soul! Don’t you know that Allah rewards the steadfastly patient ones with a reward without measure, and that fasting is unequivocally one of the most splendid forms of steadfast patience?!

O you seeker of good, this is its time! O you who is waiting for a noble gift and the pathways to mercy, that gift is almost here! O you who desires to repent, now is the hour! O you who is eager to perform acts of obedience and turn to your Lord, now is your chance to show it!

So increase in remembering Allah, in reciting the Qur’an, in repentance and seeking forgiveness. And fill your time with obedience to the Master, the Oft-forgiving.

For the happy one is he who recognizes the honor of this time and takes advantage of it, while the miserable and deprived one is he who neglects it and wastes it. May he be disgraced who goes through Ramadan without being forgiven due to his negligence and wasting it away! But glad tidings to he who attains forgiveness and mercy therein due to the good of what he made of it!

O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become al-muttaqoon [2:183]

May Allah bless me and you all in regards to the Qur’an.

[Majmoo’ al-Khutab al-Sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di pg. 93-95]
