The Qur’anic Ayaat on Love – Part 3: Those whom Allah does not Love

Sheikh Falaah ibn Ismaa’eel al-Mundakar, one of the Salafi shuyookh of Kuwait and a professor of ‘Aqeedah at Kuwait University, authored a book entitled “The Essential Beliefs Regarding Love: the Love of Allah – a Theological Study”. He devoted one of its chapters to the Qur’an ayaat regarding loving Allah. The first section of the chapter discussed the qualities of those who love Allah, and the second section listed the qualities of those whom Allah love. What follows in the third and final section of that chapter, dealing specifically with the qualities which Allah does not love:

Opposite to these and other ayaat which mention what Allah loves and is pleased with, there are many other ayaat announcing what Allah does not love. These ayaat call the believer to distance himself from what Allah does not love and to avoid to those things during his life because they are in opposition to loving Allah. So, as has already been explained, sincere love towards Allah necessarily entails being in line with what He loves and what He hates. For a lover is keen to do what his beloved loves for him to do, so he loves that thing and clings to it. Likewise, a lover is keen to know what his beloved hates so that he can avoid it and hate it too.

○ So Allah has informed us that He does not love those who transgress, for He said:

and do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors. [2:190]

○ And He informed us that He does not love those who do wrong, for He said:

But as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards, and Allah does not like the wrongdoers. [3:57]

○ And likewise, He informed us that He does not love the disbelievers, for He said:

But if they turn away – then indeed, Allah does not like the disbelievers. [3:32]

○ Similarly, He informed us that He does not love corruption or those who bring about corruption, for He said:

And when he goes away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and animals. And Allah does not like corruption. [2:205]

And He said:

And they strive throughout the land [causing] corruption, and Allah does not like corrupters. [5:64]

And these ayaat contain a clear declaration from Allah that He hates the transgressors; those who transgress the due rights of Allah by their disbelief and disobedience, and those who transgress the due rights of Allah’s slaves by their injustice and crimes, and by their lack of fairness in business transactions, as well as in other ways.

Similarly, Allah announced His hatred for the people of injustice – whether they be disbelievers or otherwise – ; those who commit injustice against His slaves; and His hatred for those who oppose Allah and His messenger.

And He announced His hatred for the people of corruption, those who do not connect what Allah has ordered to be connect, so they spread throughout the earth of Allah and among His slaves with corruption, broadcasting lewdness, disbelief and atheism, and they stand as barriers against His weak slaves carrying out what He has legislated.

These groups are enemies of Allah, so it is not permissible for a believer who loves Allah to have affection for these ones. Rather, it is obligatory upon him to hate them due to Allah’s hatred for them and to oppose them due to Allah’s enmity towards them in order that the believer may thereby complete his eemaan in Allah and affirm his love for Him. However, this does not preclude calling them to Allah in a manner with is upright and through the appropriate methods. There is no conflict between hating the enemies of Allah and calling them to Allah by the appropriate methods.

○ Allah has also informed us of His hatred for certain characteristics and for those who are characterized by them. For He said:

And do not argue on behalf of those who deceive themselves. Indeed, Allah loves not one who is a habitually sinful deceiver. [4:107]

And He said:

If you [have reason to] fear from a people betrayal, throw [their treaty] back to them, [putting you] on equal terms. Indeed, Allah does not like traitors. [8:58]

And He said:

Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful. [4:36]

And He said:

Assuredly, Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He does not like the arrogant. [16:23]

And He said:

and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess. [7:31]

And He said:

Allah does not like the public mention of evil except by one who has been wronged [4:148]

So, in these ayaat, Allah openly declares His hatred for the people of treachery and wrongdoing, those who betray Allah and His messenger and who betray their trusts and treaties.

Likewise, He has made clear His hatred for those who are conceited and arrogant without right, as well as those who are characterized with pridefulness such that they feel themselves above the Words of Allah and the Words of His messenger (ﷺ) and respond to the commands of Allah and His messenger with pridefulness and obstinacy, and who are not characterized by the humility and mercy which Allah loves.

Similarly, Allah made clear His hatred for those who are excessive in their affairs, even when it comes to their food and drink. And excessiveness in one’s action is something which the shaytaan calls to.

So all of this indicates that pridefulness, conceitedness, and not placing things in their proper places are a door that leads to injustice – may Allah protect us!

And furthermore, Allah explained that He does not love publicly mentioning evil when it comes to speech, and this is something which encompasses backbiting, transmitting slander, obscene speech, and lewdness.

So in sum, these are blameworthy characteristics, and it is not befitting for anyone who loves Allah and His messenger to be characterized by these attributes or to love those who are. Rather, he should hate these attributes and hate whoever is characterized by them, so that he might affirm his love for Allah and thereby further perfect his eemaan.

This has been an explanation and detailed discussion of some of the texts which come in the Qur’an specifically mentioning love. And texts similar to these which indicate the obligation of loving Allah and His messenger (ﷺ) have also come in the sunnah of our chosen Prophet, as have texts which direct to the signs of this love and what it necessitates, as well as explanations of the attributes which Allah loves, as well other material in terms of further details and explanations.

I will mention some of these evidence and sources texts – along with what they indicate – in order to clearly convey the meanings which Allah and His messenger (ﷺ) intended when it comes to this love. And this is a subject in which many people have erred concerning it, except for those to whom Allah granted to accord to have the correct understanding of texts of the Qur’an and the Sunnah according to the understanding and principles which the salaf al-saalih followed (may Allah be pleased with all of them), according to what they received from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) of the ways of understanding the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
