The Qur’anic Ayaat on Love – Part 2: Those whom Allah Loves

Sheikh Falaah ibn Ismaa’eel al-Mundakar, one of the Salafi shuyookh of Kuwait and a professor of ‘Aqeedah at Kuwait University, authored a book entitled “The Essential Beliefs Regarding Love: the Love of Allah – a Theological Study”. He devoted one of its chapters to the Qur’an ayaat regarding loving Allah. In the first section of that chapter, he discussed some of the ayaat specifically dealing with love and the characteristics of the slaves who truly love Allah. What follows in the second section of that chapter, which deals with the qualities that Allah loves:

There are a number of ayaat in the Qur’an which explain the attributes and actions which Allah loves, and which guide the people of eemaan to adorn themselves with these things and to hold fast to them throughout their lives so that they may attain Allah’s love, which is the greatest goal which a slave can strive to attain in the life of this world.

○ And Allah has informed us that He loves the muhsinoon (doers of good), for He said:

… and those who restrain anger and who pardon the people – and Allah loves the muhsinoon [3:134]

And He said:

And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good [2:195]

So these two ayaat contain a call to the sincere believer for him to do good to the slaves of Allah in a literal sense by helping and assisting them, and in a figurative sense in terms of good manners and  conduct towards them.

○ Likewise, Allah has informed us in many ayaat that He loves the muttaqoon and He has commanded mankind to have taqwa and has enjoined it upon them in many other ayaat in His Mighty Book. For He said:

But yes, whoever fulfills his commitment and has taqwa of Allah – then indeed, Allah loves the muttaqoon. [3:76]

And that is because al-taqwa gathers all that which is good, for it is the means to every form of good – both in the short-term and in the long-run. And it is a mighty fortress and a protecting refuge from every form of evil and harm. It was for that reason that Allah has commanded the people of both former and latter times with His statement:

And We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you and yourselves to have taqwa of Allah [4:131]

○ Likewise, Allah informed us that He loves the saabiroon (the steadfastly patient ones), for He said:

And they neither weakened nor submitted. And Allah loves the saabiroon. [3:146]

And He has informed us that al-sabr is the means and the route to a great reward and recompense, and to forgiveness from Allah and success. And He has encouraged the people of eemaan to adorn themselves with this tremendous attribute which will aid its possessors in bearing with the disliked things and harms that come in the path of Allah, in avoiding what Allah has forbidden, and in holding fast to the good deeds and acts of obedience which He has commanded.

○ Similarly, Allah has informed us that He loves those who place their reliance upon Him, for He said:

And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely (upon Him). [3:159]

And those are the ones who entrust all of their affairs to their Creator.

So they do not attach themselves to the means completely, nor are they swayed by the difficulties and challenges away from the obedience of Allah, whether that be in speech or in deed.

○ Likewise, Allah has informed us that He loves those who act justly, for He said:

And if you judge, judge between them with justice. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. [5:42]

and those are the ones who judge according to what Allah has legislated in regarding to all judgements in their lives. So neither worldly ambitions, nor personal familial relations, nor the honorable lineages of others come between them and Allah’s just rulings among the people. So they give priority to Allah’s rulings, even if it is against themselves.

○ Likewise, Allah has informed us that He loves those who perform jihaad in His path, for He said:

Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly [61:4]

And how could that not be the case when they are striving with their arms, their own selves, and their wealth and exerting all of these things in His path? They strive to raise His Word, to spread His religion, and to aid His allies, and also to degrade His enemies from among the people of kufr, shirk and obstinacy.

○ Similarly, He has informed us that He loves those who repent and those who purify themselves, for He said:

And when they have purified themselves, then come to them from where Allah has ordained for you. Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves. [2:222]

These are those who repent to Allah and turn back to Him from their major sins and whatever happens of minor sins, acts of disobedience and mistakes, and they do not persist in these things, nor do they take pride in wrongdoing. And these ones are those who purify themselves with literal purification from every sort of literal impurity and dirtiness, seeking thereby Allah’s face. This is just as they purify themselves with a figurative purification from every sort of figurative impurity and dirtiness such as as they various sorts of kufr, disobedience and sins by means of eemaan, acts of obedience, repentance and turning back to Allah.
