A Clarification on Warnings in the Qur’an: Imam al-Shinqitee

Imam Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee mentioned the following point in his book specifically authored to address any supposed contradictions or difficult passages of the Qur’an:

Allah’s statement:

You can only warn one who follows the message and fears the Most Merciful unseen. So give him good tidings of forgiveness and noble reward. [36:11]

What it outwardly apparent is that this is a specific warning to those who would benefit from it. And its parallel is Allah’s statement:

You are only a warner for those who fear it (i.e. the arrival of the Hour) [79:45]

But other ayaat have already come which demonstrate the generality of the warning, such as His statement:

… and to warn thereby a hostile people [19:97]

And His statement:

… in order that he may be a warner to all the creation [25:1]

And His statement:

So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing [92:14]

And by way of combining these passages we have submitted that the warning is in fact general, and that is is only specified to the believers in some ayaat in order to clarify that they are the ones who benefit from it to the exclusion of any others, just as Allah said:

And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers. [51:55]

And He clarified that the warning or lack thereof are the same when it comes to the eemaan of those ultimately sorrowful ones according to His statement:

[Indeed, those who disbelieve – ] it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them – they will not believe. [2:6]
