Khutbah regarding ‘Aashooraa’: Imam al-Sa’di

In a collection of more than 400 sermons of sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di, the following khutbah was one of several related to the month of Muharram:

The second Khutbah regarding the month of Allah, al-Muharram

All praise belongs to Allah, the One who is irresistibly powerful over His slaves with might and authority; the One who is fully capable of enacting His will for He did not take any assistance in the creation of the heavens and the earth; the One who aids those who aid His deen so He saves these ones from being overcome by failure. How magnificent is His greatness, not to mention the greatness of His Lordship! The necks of the tyrants humble themselves to His might in submissiveness, and the testimony of witnessed examples proves His right to be singled out. He divided the creation as He willed into those of the right and those of the left; some of them ascribed to eemaan and some ascribed to disbelief. This division was ordained and then concealed except for the fact that ultimate happiness and sorrow have signs and indications, so glad tidings to those who:

when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith [8:2]

and ill tidings for those who, when the ayaat of their Lord are mentioned to them, they suddenly become deaf and blind.

I praise Him – exalted is He – privately and openly. And I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship in truth except Allah alone with no partners – a testimony through which I hope for safety on the Day of Judgement. And I testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger – the most complete of the creation in terms of intellect and the most just in judgement.

O Allah, bestow peace and blessings upon Your slave and Messenger Muhammad and upon his family and his companions – those through whom Allah aided His religion and as such they were helpers and aids.

To proceed: O People! Exercise taqwa of Allah – the taqwa of one who fears Him, keeps his guard up and is upright -, and adhere to what is obligatory upon you of the duties of al-eemaan and al-islaam, and love Him due to that with which He has nurtured you of abundant favors and blessings.

And know – may Allah have mercy on you all – that you are facing a new year and an emphasized sacred month – especially its tenth day – of abundant and plentiful rewards.

For Ibn ‘Abbas reported:

The Prophet () came to al-Madinah and then he found the Jews fasting the day of ‘Aashooraa, so he said, “What is this day which you are fasting?” They replied, “This is the day on which Allah saved Moosaa and his people and destroyed Fir’awn and his people, so Moosaa fasted it out of gratitude to Allah and we fast it.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “We have more right and are closer to Moosaa than you,” so he fasted it and ordered its fasting.

[Reported by al-Bukhari (3315) and Muslim (2714)]

And that event is that Moosaa left – fleeing to his Lord, placing his trust in His promise. And so Fir’awn pursued him with his soldiers:

And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moosaa said, “Indeed, we are to be overtaken!” * [Moosaa] said, “No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me.” [26:61-62]

Then Allah inspired to Moosaa:

Strike the sea with your staff [26:63]

So he struck it:

and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain. [26:63]

And Moosaa and those with him proceeded in a state of peace and safety, and Fir’awn and his soldiers – the committers of wrongdoing and aggression – pursued them. So when Fir’awn and his soldiers were completely within the sea and Moosaa and his people had exited from it, then Allah commanded the sea to close over them. So when the drowning reached Fir’awn:

he said, “I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of the Muslims.” [10:90]

So it was said to him:

Now? And you had disobeyed [Him] before and were of the corrupters? [10:91]

So their bodies were swept away by the deluge, and their souls were swept away to the Hell-fire and burning punishment, and this is the established pattern of Allah regarding those who commit tyranny and depravity.

Anas said: the Messenger of Allah () said, “The fast of the Day of ‘Aashooraa – I except that Allah will expiate the sins of the previous year.” [Muslim 1162]

And on the authority of ibn ‘Abbaas in a marfoo’ narration, “Differ from the Jews: fast a day before it or a day after it.” And in another narration, “Fast a day before it and a day after it.” [Ibn Khuzaymah 2095]

I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaytaan:

And Moosaa said, “Our Lord, indeed You have given Fir’awn and his establishment splendor and wealth in the worldly life, our Lord, that they may lead [men] astray from Your way. Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so that they will not believe until they see the painful punishment.” * [Allah] said, “Your supplication has been answered.” So remain on a right course and follow not the way of those who do not know.” * And We took the Children of Israa’eel across the sea, and Fir’awn and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and enmity until, when drowning overtook him, he said, “I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israa’eel believe, and I am of the Muslims.” * Now? And you had disobeyed [Him] before and were of the corrupters? [10:88-91]

May Allah bless me and all of you in regards to the magnificent Qur’an and benefit me and all of you with what it contains of ayaat and wise remembrance. I say these words and I seek the forgiveness of Allah for myself and for all of you. He suffices the Muslims from every sin, so seek His forgiveness for them – indeed, He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
