Khutbah at the Close of the Year: Imam al-Sa’di

In a collection of more than 400 of his sermons, Imam ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di wrote the following khutbah related to the end of the (Hijri calendar) year, the passing of time and the believer’s response to these phenomena.

Khutbah at the Close of the Year

All praise belongs to Allah, the Creator of the days and months and the One who causes the years and time to pass away, the One who facilitates what is made easy and who apportions out what is decreed to happen. He knows the betrayals of the eyes and what the hearts conceal.

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah; the Forgiving, the Appreciative. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger; the best of those who command and the loftiest of those who were commanded.

O Allah, grant Your praise, blessings and salutations to our prophet, Muhammad, and to his family and his companions, and O Allah multiply the rewards for them!

To proceed: O people, have taqwa of Allah as He deserves to be feared, repent to Him and obey Him that you might attain His pleasure!

Slaves of Allah! The years are being cut off one after the other while you in your heedlessness are neglectful as if sleeping! Haven’t you witnessed the decreed events, or the oncoming of vices and harms? How the muttaqoon have succeeded and prospered? Or how the wasteful ones and those upon falsehood regretted and lost?

Alas! Indeed a year has been severed from the days of this life and you have bid it farewell. It is a witness either for you or against you according to what you entrusted to it. So whoever entrusted it with righteous deeds, then glad tidings of good for him! But whoever was wasteful with it then “may Allah grant you good” is his only consolation.

Oh, if only I knew what things were written in my record of deeds this year! Was it righteous good deeds and sincere repentance which will thereby wipe away sins? Or was it the opposite of that, in which case let the wrongdoer repent to his Lord since deeds are according to their conclusion.

So have taqwa of Allah – O slaves of Allah – and rectify the lifespan whose first part you let slip by, for indeed the remainder of the lifespan of the believer is something invaluable!

So may Allah have mercy on the slave who seizes the bounty of the days of his strength and youth and who hastens towards repentance and returning (back to Allah) before the rolling up of his record of deeds; the one who seizes a portion of the enduring good deeds before wishing for just a single hour from the many hours of his life.

Where are those who were before you during the previous times? Isn’t it the case that their destined end already pre-decreed for them? Where are our forefathers and where are our mothers and grandmothers? Where are our close relatives and where are our neighbors? Where are are acquaintances and where are our friends? There have all traveled onward to the the graves, and by Allah, scarce is our remaining time after them!

Their homes are now inhabited by others, and their friends have forgotten them and abandoned them. The news of what they used to do unsettles the people of understanding, and reminders of them sadden the hearts of their loved ones. Their situations are a lesson for those who take lesson, so consider the conditions of those who have passed on and take admonishment from the previous nations in order that the hardened hearts might be softened.

Look at yourselves and what remains of your time of respite, and seize the bounty of righteous good deeds during your life, before

a soul should say, “Oh [how great is] my regret over what I neglected in regard to Allah” [39:56]

such that one would say, “How far gone is the period of ableness!” And man has attained from his deeds either something of goodness or disobedience.

So we ask You – O Allah, O Generous One, O Bounteous One – that You would conclude this year of ours with pardoning and forgiveness, with mercy and generosity and blessings, and that You would make the upcoming year blessed and praiseworthy, and provide us with ample provisions, tawfeeq and moderation during it.

O Allah, cause our actions to conclude with righteous good deeds and rectify all of our affairs for us!

O Allah, set aright our religion which is the protection of our affair, and set aright our worldly lives which are our livelihoods, and set aright our hereafter which is our final destinations. Make this life an increase in every good for us, and make death a rest for us from every evil.

O Allah, make us to conclude with a happy conclusion, and make us among those whom you have written good and an increase for them – O Generous and Merciful One!
