Khutbah regarding Hajj: Imam al-Sa’di

The following khutbah was one of several on the subject of the Hajj found in a collection of more than 400 sermons of sheikh ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di:

First Khutbah on the subject of the Hajj

All praise is due to Allah, the One who has ordained Hajj (pilgrimage) to His sacred house, and He made its purpose an expiation of sins and wrong-doings, and He is not pleased with anyone who completes it and fulfills its rights except that He would reward him with the attainment of His pleasure in the abode of peace.

I praise Him for making this House a place of refuge and safety for mankind. He made the hearts of mankind to incline towards it with love and and desire, so they frequently return to it and increase in longing and yearning for it. So their hearts are always pining for it, and those of them who are unable grieve at being cut off from finding a way to it.

So glorified is He who invites His slaves to make pilgrimage to His sacred house in order that they may be lavishly granted abundant ihsaan and the most plentiful of blessings. So they set out towards it from every distant mountain pass, by foot and on mount, and for His sake they leave their children, families, homelands and loved ones. They exert themselves and they spend their wealths, seeking the bounty and pleasure of Allah, in order that they may witness the benefits for them – among these being the rectification of their religion and their worldly lives – and in order that they may be present at the different sites of the Hajj so that they might know what their purposes and goals are. So blessed is He who blesses and guides them, who sends them forth to His generous hospitality and spurs them on.

And I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship in truth except Allah alone with no partner in His divinity or in His lordship or in His attributes or actions. He is absolutely alone in His bestowing His blessings and favors upon the creation.

And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger. May the blessings of Allah be upon him, and upon his companions and his family, and upon those who follow him in his words, deeds, and his every way.

To proceed: O mankind! Have taqwa of Allah the Exalted, and establish what Allah has made obligatory upon you of the Hajj to His house and and traveling to His sanctuary . And be eager for what He pours out of His generosity, beneficence, bounties, various gifts and munificence upon the travelers to His house. He said – and who is more truthful in speech than Allah? – :

And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves – then indeed, Allah is free from need of the creation. [3:97]

And in the Saheehayn that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Indeed, Allah has ordained the Hajj upon you, so make Hajj” [Muslim #1337].

And he was asked, “Which deed is most beloved to Allah?” He replied,”Eemaan in Allah.” It was said, “Then what?” He replied, “Jihaad in the path of Allah.” It was said, “Then what?” He replied, “Hajj mabroor (accepted Hajj)” [al-Bukhari #26, Muslim #83].

And he said, “Whoever makes Hajj to this House and neither spoke nor acted indecently, he will be free of sins like the day his mother gave birth to him” [al-Bukhari #1449, Muslim #1350].

[And he said] “One ‘Umrah to the next is an expiation for what occurred between them, and there is no reward for Hajj mabroor other than al-Jannah” [al-Bukhari #1683, Muslim #1349].

[And he said] “Perform Hajj and ‘Umrah one after the other, for indeed they remove poverty and sins just as the bellows removes impurities from iron, gold and silver. And there is no reward for Hajj mabroor other than al-Jannah” [Ahmad 1/387, al-Tirmidhi #810, al-Nasaa’i #2631].

[And he said] “Those performing Hajj and ‘Umrah are a delegation to Allah – if they ask Him He answers them, and if they request His forgiveness He forgives them” [ibn Maajah #2892].

[And he said] “When it is the Day of ‘Arafah, then Allah descends to the lowest heaven and then he boasts about the people to the angels, saying, ‘Look at my slaves, they come to me disheveled and dusty from every distant mountain pass. I bear witness to you that I have forgiven them.’ So the angels say, ‘Among them is so-and-so who is exhausted, and so-and-so and so-and-so.'” He said, “Allah says, ‘Indeed, I have forgiven them.” So there is no day on which more people are freed from the Hell-fire than on the Day of ‘Arafah. [ibn Khuzaymah #2839]

[And he said] “The Shaytaan is not seen more abased or more degraded or more defeated or more angry than he is on the Day of ‘Arafah” [‘Abd al-Razzaaq #8832, al-Bayhaqi #4069]. And there isn’t any other reason for that than what he sees of the mercy descending and Allah overlooking the grave sins.

Isn’t there anyone eager to be among the groups rushing to the House of Allah and unto this hospitality and ihsaan? Isn’t there anyone craving for these great sensations and that which Allah grants of goodness, answers to supplications, and blessings? Isn’t there anyone who will leave off his own loves out of love for al-Raheem al-Rahman? For whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah will recompense him with something better than that in the dwellings of Paradise.

So what greater grief is there than the one who sees the travelers departing to the House of Allah while he himself is staying with those who remain behind? And what deprivation is more severe than the one who missed out of the profits of these stations of blessings and thus became one of the losers?

O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that – then those are the losers. * And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, “My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous.” * But never will Allah delay a soul when its time has come. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do. [63:9-11]

May Allah bless me and all of you in regards to the Qur’an.
