A Mercy to All Creation: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Imam Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote the following in his book of tafsir:

Allah’s statement:

And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to all creation [21:107]

In this noble ayah Allah mentioned that He did not send this noble Prophet (ﷺ) to the created beings except as a mercy towards them. For he came to them with what would please them and with that by which they would achieve every good thing of the good of this life and the hereafter if they were to follow him. And whoever opposed him and did not follow, then he is one who has squandered his portion of this great mercy.

Some of the people of knowledge have struck an example, saying: If Allah were to have created a well for the creation, abundantly supplied with water, easy to draw from, by which mankind could irrigate their cultivation and livestock with its water, and consequently bringing forth additional blessing thereby. But there remained some people who squandered this, being despondent towards its use, such that they wasted their share of this well [by not using it all] – but still the flowing well is a mercy from Allah in-and-of-itself and a blessing for both groups of people. However the despondent ones made a self-inflicted tribulation since they forbade benefiting from it. This is exemplified by Allah’s statement:

Have you not considered those who exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief and settled their people [in] the home of ruin? [14:28]

And it is said: He was a mercy to the disbelievers in terms of their punishments being delayed because of him, and because of that they felt safe from an eradicating punishment. But the first position is more clear and correct.

And what He mentioned in this noble ayah that He sent him as a mercy to all creation proves that he came with a mercy to the creation in the form of what was included in this glorious Qur’an, and this meaning comes clearly in many places in the Book of Allah, such as His statement:

And is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe. [29:51]

And His statement:

And you were not expecting that the Book would be conveyed to you, but [it is] a mercy from your Lord. So do not be an assistant to the disbelievers. [28:86]

And we have already brought forth the ayaat which prove that in [the tafsir of] surah al-Kahf in two places therein. And in Saheeh Muslim from the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah who said: it was said, “O Messenger of Allah! Supplicate against the polytheists!” He replied, “Verily I was not sent as a curser; I was only sent as a mercy.”
