Allah invites the disbelievers to repent: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Allah says in surah al-Maa’idah:

They have certainly disbelieved who say, “Allah is the third of three.” And there is no deity worthy of worship except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment. * So will they not repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. [5:73-74]

Commenting briefly on the latter ayah, Imam Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote:

And His statement:

“So will they not repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful”

In this ayah Allah points out that those who say, “Indeed Allah is the third of three“, if only they were to repent from that to Him then he would turn to them in forgiveness and forgive them, because He is making an emotional appeal to people in the best and kindest of ways with His statement, “So will they not repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness?“, and then He points out  with His statement, “And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful” that if they do that then He will forgive them. And He declared that this meaning was generally applicable to all disbelievers with His statement:

Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease (from disbelief) their past will be forgiven. But if they return (thereto), then the examples of those (punished) before them have already preceded (as a warning). [8:38]
