The two types of ‘with-ness’ of Allah: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

Allah informs us in surah al-Nahl:

Indeed, Allah is with those who have taqwa of Him and those who are doers of good. [16:128]

Commenting on this in his tafsir, Imam Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote:

Allah’s statement:

Indeed, Allah is with those who have taqwa of Him and those who are doers of good.

He mentioned in this noble ayah that He is with His god-fearing and good-doing slaves, and the clarification of the meaning of taqwa and al-ihsaan has already preceded this.

And this “with-ness” with His believing slaves is by means of aid, support and granting success, and this meaning is reiterated in many other places, such as His statement:

Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see. [20:46]

And His statement:

[Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, “I am with you” [8:12]

And His statement:

Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us. [9:40]

And His statement:

[Moosaa] said, “No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me.” [26:62]

As well as in other ayaat.

And as for the general “with-ness” towards all creation, then this is by means of complete encompassing in terms of knowledge and permeation of power, and the fact that everything is within His grasp. So all created things in existence are in His hand – even those things smaller than a mustard seed. And this is also mentioned in many ayaat, such as His statement:

There is in no private conversation three but that He is the fourth of them, nor are there five but that He is the sixth of them – and no less than that and no more except that He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did, on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allah is, of all things, Knowing. [58:7]

And His statement:

and He is with you wherever you are. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing. [57:4]

And His statement:

Then We will surely relate [their deeds] to them with knowledge, and We were not [at all] absent. [7:7]

And His statement:

And, [O Muhammad], you are not [engaged] in any matter or recite any of the Qur’an and you [people] do not do any deed except that We are witness over you when you are involved in it. And not absent from your Lord is any [part] of an atom’s weight within the earth or within the heaven or [anything] smaller than that or greater but that it is in a clear register. [10:61]

as well as other ayaat.

So He establishes Himself upon His throne as He has said – in a manner which is befitting of His complete perfection and majesty -, and He is encompassing of His creation [in terms of knowledge]; all of them are in the grasp of His hand, none of them able to distance themselves from that by an atom’s measure on the earth or in the heavens, neither less than that nor more than that except that it is already recorded in a clear record.
