The Nine Signs given to Moosaa: Tafsir al-Shinqitee

In his tafsir of surah al-Israa, Imam Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shinqitee wrote:

Allah’s statement:

“And We had certainly given Moosaa nine clear signs” [17:101]

Some of the people of knowledge said: these nine signs are the staff, the hand, famine, the sea, flooding, locusts, lice, frogs and blood as clear signs.

And Allah has clarified these signs in other places, such as His statement:

So Moses threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, manifest. * And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white [with radiance] for the observers.” [7:107-108]

And His statement:

“And We certainly seized the people of Fir’awn with years of famine and a deficiency in fruits that perhaps they would be reminded.” [7:130]

And His statement:

“Then We inspired to Moosaa, ‘Strike with your staff the sea,’ and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.” [26:63]

And His statement:

“So We sent upon them the flood and locusts and lice and frogs and blood as distinct signs” [7:133]

And other than that from the clarifying sins which we have mentioned. And some of the people of knowledge made the mountain a replacement for the famine, and from what perhaps clarifies this is His statement:

“And [mention] when We raised the mountain above them [the Children of Israa’eel]* as if it was a dark cloud” [7:171]

And the likes of this from the signs.

[Adhwaa’ al-Bayaan 3/188]

*Translator’s Note: The great mufassir Abu’l-Fidaa Ismaa’eel ibn Kathir made the incisive point in his tafsir of the same ayah that the signs referred to here are those shown to Fir’awn, and not the various other miracles of Moosaa. He mentioned the nine signs and then wrote:

And Moosaa (‘alaihi al-salaam) was given many other signs, and among them are his hitting the stone with his staff and the rivers flowing out from it, and among them are their being shaded by the clouds and the manna and quails, and other than that from what Allah gave to the Children of Israa’eel after their exodus from the land of Egypt. However, here He mentioned the nine signs which Fir’awn and his people of Egypt witnessed. These were a proof against them, for they opposed them and were obstinate in the face of them in terms of disbelief and argumentation.
