“O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance”: Tafsir al-Sa’di

In His Book, in surah al-Ahzaab, Allah directs His believing slaves with the following ayaat:

O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance (41) And exalt Him morning and afternoon. (42) It is He who confers blessing upon you, and His angels [ask Him to do so] that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And He is Merciful to the believers. (43) Their greeting the Day they meet Him will be, “Peace.” And He has prepared for them a noble reward. (44)

Imam ‘Abdur-Rahman ibn Naasir al-Sa’di, in his book of tafsir, wrote the following about these ayaat:

Allah the Exalted commanded the believers to remember Him with much remembrance —with (the utterance) of Tahleel (لا إله إلا الله); Tahmeed (الحمد لله); Tasbeeh (سبحان الله); Takbeer (الله أكبر) and other than that; and with every speech in which there is drawing close to Allah. And at the bare minimum that a person is constant in performing the supplications of the morning and the evening, after the five obligatory prayers, and at times when one is faced with obstacles and situations.

It is incumbent to be constant (in this remembrance) at all times and in the midst of all circumstances; because that is indeed worship through which a doer of (good) deeds is successful, and it is a comfort; an urge towards love of Allah and knowledge (ma’arifah) of Him; an assistance towards good, and a guard of the tongue against ugly speech.

And glorify His Praises morning and afternoon” – meaning: The early part of the day and its end, because of their virtue, and their honored status, and the easiness of performing deeds within them.

It is He who confers blessing upon you, and His angels [ask Him to do so] that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And He is Merciful to the believers.” – meaning: [the blessings] of His mercy to the believers and His kindness to them, that He made some of His blessings upon them, and His commendation, and the blessings of his angels and his supplicators, that they would be taken out of the darknesses of sin and ignorance into the light (nur) of al-eemaan and success and ‘ilm and (good) deeds, for this is the greatest blessing, bestowed upon the obedient slaves, which demands gratitude for this blessing from them and for them to increase in the remembrance of Allah, Who has been kind and merciful to them, and Who has made the carriers of His throne – the best of the angels – and those around Him exalt and praise their Lord and seek forgiveness for those who believe, so they said,

Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire. Our Lord, and admit them to gardens of perpetual residence which You have promised them and whoever was righteous among their fathers, their spouses and their offspring. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. And protect them from the evil consequences [of their deeds]. And he whom You protect from evil consequences that Day – You will have given him mercy. And that is the great attainment.” [40:7-9]

So this is His mercy and blessing upon them in the dunya.

And as for His mercy in the hereafter, then there is apportioned mercy, and the best rewards, and that is the success of [attaining] the pleasure of their Lord, and His greetings, and hearing His sublime speech, and seeing His beautiful face, and receiving the great reward, which none knows nor can grasp it in its entirety, except for those to whom it is given, and about this He said, “Their greeting the Day they meet Him will be, ‘Peace.’ And He has prepared for them a noble reward.
